The odds were stacked against Dillon Gabriel as he took his first start in an NFL game. Going to international waters, he was facing off against a dangerous Minnesota Vikings defense in London. Unsurprisingly, Gabriel could not pull off the upset, as the Vikings won 21-17, to improve to 3-2 on the year, while the Cleveland Browns further fell into the AFC North abyss at 1-4.
However, for the most part, the third-round rookie had a solid outing. For his first start, his stat line was nothing to scoff at. Completing 19 of his 33 passes, he threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns. Moreover, at the end of the game, he created a glimmer of hope, trying to lead a miraculous drive with just 21 seconds left on the clock. Unfortunately, it didn’t end in his favor, as the finger of blame turned squarely to head coach Kevin Stefanski.
Is Kevin Stefanski the Problem in Cleveland?
A two-time Coach of the Year, Stefanski has built his reputation through some excellent defensive units, which have powered the Browns to two playoff appearances under his reign, even while the quarterback position remains a major question mark.
However, on this particular night, the fan base wanted to believe that changing the quarterback from Flacco could flip the script for the franchise. Unfortunately, the game did not end on a high note for Cleveland.
After letting the Vikings get down the field and score a touchdown with just 25 seconds left on the clock, their time management on the final possession was far from ideal. With seven seconds left in the game, the Browns tried to go for a chunk play to go out of bounds.
A very risky proposition, especially with no timeouts left, the gamble did not pay off for Cleveland. Jamari Thrash caught the ball and had a 22-yard reception. However, he was tackled before he could step out of bounds, ending the game immediately.
Instantly, the fans were pissed with how the team operated in crunch time. But with Gabriel having a solid encounter through and through, their vitriol was against one man in particular.
Some directly explained the situation, claiming, “Browns so s**t man Kevin Stefanski can’t manage a clock. Defense sh**s themselves when it matters, and our offense sucks 24/7.”
For others, the choice of play from the veteran head coach was unfathomable as they openly questioned, “For the love of god, fire Kevin Stefanski, what was that?”

Unfortunately, for long-term fans, it seemed like a tale they had seen before. As one fan wrote, “Fire Stefanski. That was a game the Browns should’ve won,” he deliberated in adding, “Again.”

For those fans, the cry for a change on the sidelines was a battle they had been fighting for a long time. As one fan wrote, “Get rid of Stefanski. How many more times do we have to say it?” His anger was palpable.

Some made it clear that it wasn’t the rookie quarterback, but the veteran head coach who had to shoulder the blame for this game. As one explained, “You have no clue. Stefanski lost this game for us. Not Gabriel.”

For some, the hope that Gabriel brought being snuffed out in such heartbreaking fashion was the final straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back. “First time I’ll say it since he got here: Fire Stefanski.”

It seems unlikely that a Browns organization that has had some of its most sustained success of the last quarter-century under Stefanski will readily move on from him.
However, the results need to change quickly in Cleveland. Otherwise, fan anger could very quickly turn into apathy.
