Calls Mount for 49ers To ‘Put in Mac Jones’ As Fans Slam Brock Purdy’s Performance vs. Panthers on MNF

After Brock Purdy's first-half struggles, San Francisco 49ers fans began asking for backup quarterback Mac Jones to make an appearance.

The San Francisco 49ers entered Week 12’s edition of Monday Night Football hoping to take advantage of a vulnerable Carolina Panthers defense. Instead, the Santa Clara faithful have been treated to one of the season’s sloppiest games, featuring multiple turnovers and just one first-half touchdown.

Quarterback Brock Purdy, a week removed from dicing up the Arizona Cardinals, has struggled mightily. And after backup quarterback Mac Jones’ success in keeping San Francisco afloat, 49ers fans are beginning to grow antsy.

San Francisco 49ers Fans Begging for Mac Jones

After a long opening drive that resulted in a Jauan Jennings receiving touchdown, Purdy’s night unraveled.

Panthers corner Jaycee Horn intercepted the first pass of Purdy’s second drive. The 49ers were able to intercept Bryce Young on the ensuing drive, but when Purdy threw his second pick of the night soon after, the calls for Jones flooded social media.

“49ers should put in Mac Jones,” one fan said on X.

They weren’t alone. As the mistakes piled up, spoiling three drives and keeping a weak Carolina offense in the game, a Jones appearance felt inevitable.

“Brock Purdy is not our guy!!! WE WANT MAC JONES !!!!,” another posted.

Purdy finished his first half, completing 14-of-23 attempts for 114 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. San Francisco has its defense to thank for a 10-3 halftime lead.

Purdy’s Week 11 performance ranked 13th among NFL quarterbacks, according to PFSN’s Quarterback Impact metric. While he doesn’t qualify for the season-long metric because of the turf toe injury that cost him all but four games, Purdy faces stiff competition in Jones.

In his limited action, Jones ranks 11th in QBi. That’s enough to earn the trust of many fans.

“Mac Jones coming in to replace Brock Purdy,” a fan posted, with a video of Edwin Diaz’s famous closer entrance attached.

Week 12 hasn’t been kind to Purdy, who has been punished nearly every time he has attempted to stretch the field. The bulk of his production can be attributed to tight end George Kittle and running back Christian McCaffrey, who had three and five catches in the first two quarters, respectively.

Purdy ended the first half by giving McCaffrey a chunk gain against a prevent defense, hoping to get into rhythm and avoid disaster before halftime. He’ll need to be much better in the second half to keep the heat off him and to ensure a 7-4 49ers team can keep pace in a loaded NFC playoff race.

If not, it’s only a matter of time before the “put in Mac Jones PLEASE” posts become impossible to ignore.
