Caleb Williams Embraces Expectations, Early Challenges Under New Bears Head Coach
As the Chicago Bears begin a pivotal offseason under new head coach Ben Johnson, second-year quarterback Caleb Williams is making it clear that he’s all-in. After a rookie season filled with flashes of brilliance, mixed with growing pains, the 23-year-old is welcoming the high-stakes environment Johnson brings.
He’s viewing it as the catalyst for his evolution as a franchise quarterback. In his first year, the 2024 No. 1 overall pick showed glimpses of his immense talent: an electric arm, off-platform creativity, and leadership potential.
But, Williams also faced criticism for issues like telegraphing throws and inconsistent timing. Now, entering Year 2, the former USC standout is determined to grow from those early setbacks and build a strong foundation with Johnson at the helm.
“Us growing together is key. Starting now,” Williams told reporters from Halas Hall at the Bears’ practice facility on April 8. “Him pushing me is key. I know that, and he knows that.”

Bears QB Ready for Ben Johnson’s Complex Offensive System
Williams isn’t just easing into the new system, he’s already diving into the complexities of Johnson’s offense. The system incorporates a higher volume of under-center formations and a more demanding structure. Williams, used to shotgun-heavy schemes at USC, is adapting quickly and taking leadership of the huddle.
Johnson, known for engineering Detroit’s high-powered attack, is testing his new quarterback early and Williams is responding.
“Today, we had our first quiz as a QB room,” Williams said, referring to Johnson’s hands-on approach. “And it’s not like a real quiz where go up and write stuff. It’s just us. We went over a few things yesterday, talked about a few things, and Ben walked in this morning, flung open the door, made a grand entrance, and then we got to work with him testing us about what we talked about yesterday and tjomg

This immediate emphasis on accountability and communication is setting the tone for what the Bears hope will be a transformative year. Williams believes he has a strong connection with Johnson already, comparing it to the rapport he felt with college coach Lincoln Riley. That sense of alignment could prove essential as the Bears attempt to end years of instability at quarterback.
“If you have that position right, it helps with a bunch of different things,” Williams said. “So, building that bond … him pushing me, and us growing together for years to come is going to be fun.”
With the first on-field test set for minicamp on April 21, all eyes will be on whether Williams can turn promise into production, and finally lead the Bears into a new era.
