The Florida Gators’ defensive tackle Caleb Banks has been an intriguing prospect. He impressed at both the Senior Bowl and the NFL Scouting Combine, showcasing a rare blend of size and mobility at 6-foot-6 and 327 pounds. His draft stock had been rising steadily.
That momentum shifted, however, after reports of a foot injury complicated his outlook. The development may create an opportunity for the Kansas City Chiefs to capitalize.
The Chiefs Are Ready To Play the Caleb Banks Card
According to Dane Brugler of The Athletic, the injury occurred just before Banks was scheduled to complete his full testing in Indianapolis.
Brugler reported, citing sources, that Banks suffered a broken foot at the Combine that would sideline him until June. The injury happened the night before his on-field testing, and he performed a partial workout without knowing the extent of the injury.

The report quickly made its way around league circles, including within Chiefs media. Shortly after the update surfaced, Chiefs insider Charles Goldman reposted the news and offered a simple explanation for Kansas City’s growing interest, writing: “Makes sense why the Chiefs brought him in for a visit.”
A comment under Goldman’s post read, “29 please,” suggesting fans hoped Banks’ draft stock would fall. Goldman added that it “might make it to even 40 now.”

The logic behind that reaction is fairly straightforward. Prior to the injury, Banks was trending toward the top half of the first round. We are talking top-15, top-10 territory. But medical concerns can change draft boards quickly, and teams may now hesitate to spend a premium pick on a defensive tackle recovering from a foot fracture.
That potential slide is where Kansas City enters the picture. The team recently acquired the No. 29 overall pick from the Los Angeles Rams in a trade involving cornerback Trent McDuffie while also holding the No. 40 selection. That’s where Goldman’s comment suddenly makes a lot of sense for Chiefs fans.
And the fit becomes even more intriguing when paired with Chris Jones. The Chiefs’ All-Pro defensive tackle remains the centerpiece of the defensive front after recording 29 total tackles, 7.0 sacks and two passes defended across 17 games last season.
Even in a difficult 6-11 campaign, Jones stood out as the defense’s most consistent force. According to PFSN’s NFL DT Impact Metric, he ranked No. 7 nationally with an impact score of 86.6 and a B grade.
Pairing a high-upside rookie like Banks, at a bargain, with Jones would give KC something it has lacked in recent seasons: the presence of another disruptive interior defender capable of collapsing pockets. Banks has also made it clear how much he values being on the field, even when injuries enter the conversation.
Reflecting on his decision to return late in the season for Florida despite dealing with a foot issue, he said: “I really wasn’t thinking about that at the moment. I’m still not currently thinking about that. I’m grounded where I’m at right now.
“So, just being out there with my brothers, I think that’s the most important thing. If I’m able to play, then I’m gonna go play. I’m not gonna just sit down and not go out there and fight with them, regardless of the situation of what’s going on.”
That mindset underscores why Banks remains an appealing prospect despite injury concerns. For teams willing to bet on his recovery, the potential reward is significant. If the draft board breaks the right way, the Chiefs could turn an unfortunate injury into one of the biggest bargains of the draft.
