Buccaneers Rookie Shilo Sanders Opens Up After Turning Heads With Explosive Training Camp Moment

Undrafted rookie Shilo Sanders turns heads at Buccaneers camp with a standout play and fan support as he pushes for a spot on the final roster.

The NFL training camp season always brings unexpected storylines, and one of the most intriguing early developments is unfolding in Tampa Bay. While most rookie buzz surrounded high draft picks, an undrafted safety has managed to steal the spotlight, at least for a moment. That safety is Shilo Sanders.

How Did Shilo Sanders Turn One Play Into a Tampa Bay Moment?

Sanders, the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, made headlines on Friday, July 25, during the Buccaneers’ training camp. Despite going undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft, he’s making every rep count, and now fans are taking notice.

During practice, Sanders forced a pass breakup that electrified the crowd. According to Fox News’ Mark Skol Jr., the fans began chanting his name, prompting Sanders to raise his arms in response.

The moment marked a significant milestone in Shilo’s young NFL journey. “Shoutout to Bucs nation! It felt good, my first fan interaction on the field, made a play. The fans showed love, this part of football,” Sanders said, reflecting on the interaction.

While public adoration is growing, Shilo’s challenge remains steep. Teams must cut rosters from 90 to 53 players by August 27, which puts every undrafted rookie under intense scrutiny.

What Are Coaches Seeing From Sanders in Tampa Bay?

Still, Shilo is proving he’s not just a feel-good story. Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles, speaking about the play, said, “Picking up the playbook real well. It was a good PBU… he made a play and he’s working to get better.”

Shilo’s path to this moment has been anything but conventional. As PFSN’s Max Dorsey detailed on July 23, Shilo started his college career at South Carolina as a three-star cornerback recruit.

After two seasons, he transferred to Jackson State to play under his father, where he switched to safety. He later followed Coach Prime to Colorado for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Despite a solid college career, Shilo wasn’t drafted. But Tampa Bay offered him a chance, signing him as an undrafted free agent. Deion attended the first day of camp, supporting Shilo from the sidelines and speaking with Bowles. The moment was symbolic. Coach Prime is no longer his coach, but still very much his biggest supporter.

Statistically, the odds are against him. CBS Sports’ Eric Galko notes that just 15-20 undrafted rookies make an NFL roster each year out of nearly 400-500. But Shilo’s recent play and the crowd’s reaction suggest he may be one of the few who defy those odds.

With three preseason games ahead, the real test lies in how he performs in live action. If Shilo continues to flash this level of playmaking ability, he might just force Tampa Bay’s hand. Whether he sticks with the Bucs or ends up elsewhere, one thing is clear: Shilo has entered the NFL spotlight on his own terms.
