Adjusting to the NFL is never easy, and for Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, the transition has already been filled with challenges. The Ohio State product entered the league with high expectations, but his early remarks reveal that what happens behind closed doors might be tougher than game day itself.
Emeka Egbuka Adjusts to NFL Life Under Todd Bowles
Appearing on “Up And Adams show” with host Kay Adams, Egbuka shared what has truly tested him in his first few months. When Adams asked about the most challenging part of his career so far, the rookie did not hesitate long. “It’s the practices, I would say. Like, everything that happens in practice is harder than the game,” he explained.
Egbuka said the Buccaneers’ staff intentionally makes practice more challenging than games so players react naturally on Sundays. He described the specifics of practice challenges when Adams pressed him about Coach Todd Bowles, admitting, “The kitchen sink. He throws the kitchen sink at you at practice.”

That blunt line gives readers a direct sense of how intense camp and training sessions have been.
The rookie described how Bowles disguised coverages and blitzes during camp, sometimes showing pressure from one side and attacking from another, forcing him to adapt mentally. That preparation has helped Egbuka develop what he called his “intellectual part of the game.” The on-field results back up his work.

As PFSN’s Jordon Lawrenz reported, Egbuka’s early-season flashes include three touchdowns in his first two games, highlighted by a dramatic one-handed catch over Sauce Gardner that drew national attention.
Former Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant praised the rookie directly, writing, “Like I said the Bucs found themselves a star. EMEKA EGBUKA people.”

With Chris Godwin sidelined, Egbuka has quickly become Baker Mayfield’s trusted target alongside Mike Evans, collecting eight receptions for 96 yards and three scores through two weeks.
From two 1,000-yard seasons at Ohio State to immediate impact in the Buccaneers, the 22-year-old’s start shows both physical skill and mental growth. Yet the surprising takeaway remains that the toughest battles of his young NFL life are being fought in practice, not under Sunday’s lights.
