Browns vs. Ravens Prediction

While all of the matchups in the AFC North Division are grudge matches, this one Sunday between the Browns and Ravens has a little more juice. It’s a battle that will go a long way to determining just which team has the best defense.

Is it the Browns, who are ranked No. 1 in total defense (234.8 YPG)?

Or is it the Ravens, who are the No. 1 in scoring defense (13.8 PPG)?

For Cleveland, this is a chance to remain in contention for a division title but to exact some payback on Baltimore from their first meeting six weeks ago. In that Oct. 1 matchup, the Ravens humiliated the Browns on their field, beating Cleveland 28-3.

It was the fewest points scored by the Browns in this matchup since 2009, when Baltimore shutout Cleveland 16-0.

Of course, that first matchup did not feature Cleveland quarterback Deshaun Watson, who missed that game with a shoulder problem. Watson returned to action last week and was sharp against the Cardinals, throwing for 219 yards with two touchdown passes and zero interceptions in an easy Cleveland win.

And this will be the first meeting between Watson and Lamar Jackson since 2020.

Jackson is coming off a season-high completion percentage of 80.8% (21 for 26) in last week’s win over the Seahawks. His previous season high came in the Week 4 win over the Browns, when Jackson completed 15 of 19 passes (79.0%).

Jackson leads the NFL in both completion percentage (71.5%) and rush yards per game by a quarterback (47.5 YPG). In the history of the NFL, there is only one quarterback to lead the NFL in completion percentage and rushing YPG by a quarterback: Steve Young in 1994.

Both quarterbacks figure to be under pressure in this matchup. The Browns rank 3rd in quarterback pressure percentage (43.5), while the Ravens are No. 2 in total quarterback pressures this season (146). Baltimore leads the NFL in sacks with 35, and Cleveland is tied for seventh with 27 sacks.

On the injury side of things, the Browns are dealing with major problems on the offensive line. Earlier this week, Cleveland put starting left tackle Jedrick Wills on the IR, and now their other starting tackle, Dawand Jones, will miss the game with shoulder/knee injuries.

For Baltimore, running back Keaton Mitchell, who rushed for 138 yards and a score last week, is questionable with a hamstring problem.

So far this season, these are the matchups the Ravens have lived for. Not only are they 3-0 against teams that entered the game with a winning record, but the Ravens have dominated them, outscoring those three teams — Browns, Lions, Seahawks — by a combined score of 101-12.

After going 1-6-1 against the spread at home last season, the Ravens have turned that betting record around, going 3-1 ATS at home this season. As for the Browns, they are just 1-9-1 against the spread over the last two seasons in games following a straight-up win, including a 0-3-1 ATS record in those games this season.

Baltimore’s too good, and Cleveland’s too banged up in the wrong spots. I’ll take the home team here.
