Browns Insider Refuses To Shut Down Possibility of Cleveland Pulling Off Blockbuster Terry McLaurin Trade

Cleveland Browns insider assesses a possible blockbuster trade as the team’s wide receiver situation remains unclear for the season.

The Cleveland Browns’ receiver room has a Jerry Jeudy problem. He’s talented and puts up numbers, but those dropped passes keep piling up. Now, one NFL insider thinks the Browns might have found their answer in Washington, and it could shake up both franchises before training camp kicks off.

Could Terry McLaurin Be the Browns’ Missing Piece at Wide Receiver?

Right now, Jerry Jeudy is not only the most recognizable but also the most talented wideout on the roster. Jeudy runs excellent routes, creating separation with consistency. During the 2024 season, the former Alabama product enjoyed a career high in receiving yards with 1,229.

However, the bugaboo that follows Jeudy involves the numerous drops from either concentration or timing issues. In 2024, the veteran has dropped 13 total passes. Beyond Jeudy, the Browns boast a modest receiver room with Diontae Johnson.

Cleveland makes Johnson’s fifth team in a year, which speaks volumes about his situation. While no one ever doubted Johnson’s abilities, his attitude raises red flags around the organization.

With that said, how should the team address the glaring need at wideout? Cleveland.com writer Mary Kay Cabot discusses a potential fix. She joined “The Dawgs Podcast” to discuss the possible move.

“You have to at least look into it, weigh the pros and cons, and determine what that might look like over the next four years or something like that,” Cabot said. “It’s worth noting that McLaurin will turn 30 when the season begins. The odds of him offering top-end production for three to four years into the future are not high. I wouldn’t rule it out, but I don’t get the sense right now that they’re looking to add a big, high-priced receiver.”

Given these concerns, exploring what makes a potential McLaurin trade a realistic option for the Commanders is essential.

What Makes This McLaurin Trade Scenario Realistic?

Currently, Terry McLaurin and the Commanders’ front office are at an impasse. He wants an extension, and management looks like it will dig its heels in, especially after trading for Deebo Samuel.

Cleveland could offer a deal if McLaurin doesn’t lower his demands, and Washington proves willing to ride with Samuel as their lead receiver. Like Cabot said, McLaurin celebrates his 30th birthday on Sept. 15. Teams could view the wideout as a player whose best days reside in his rearview mirror.

For Cleveland, that age factor would lower the price, probably significantly. If the Browns offered a third-round pick in the 2026 draft, throwing in a fourth, that could work. Meanwhile, McLaurin still wants an extension.

Using Spotrac, you can ballpark what a fair deal could resemble. One option arises when using a player of a similar age and skill set. Stefon Diggs signed a three-year, $63.5 million contract with the New England Patriots. Although more accomplished than McLaurin, they fit similar spaces.

When Cleveland figures out its quarterback situation, it will need another wide receiver. Opponents will not respect Joe Flacco or Kenny Pickett, but that becomes worse when they only need to worry about Jeudy. At least with McLaurin, the offense could potentially add a player who takes the pressure off, provides balance, and will gain 1,000 yards. Will they pull the trade trigger?
