Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson remain locked in one of the NFL’s more intriguing quarterback battles entering 2026. However, after Watson’s standout practice on Wednesday, Denver Broncos legend Shannon Sharpe weighed in with a cryptic take on the competition.

The Cleveland Browns are seeing the intensity in their quarterback room continue to build as Watson battles second-year quarterback Sanders for the QB1 job heading.
Head coach Todd Monken faces a difficult decision as he works toward naming his Week 1 starter. Though the Browns are not expected to make a final call for a few more weeks, Watson’s standout showing during Wednesday’s practice has added another wrinkle to the competition.
The veteran signal-caller put together probably his best performance of training camp after previously struggling with inconsistent mechanics and inaccurate throws. According to reports, Watson completed 17 of his 20 pass attempts during both 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 team drills, finishing the day with seven combined touchdown passes and zero interceptions.
That kind of efficient, mistake-free outing immediately intensified the quarterback competition. Watson’s ability to operate at a high level made Monken’s decision much more complicated than simply handing the job to the younger, fan-favorite Sanders.
Still, not everyone was ready to overreact to one impressive practice. On the latest episode of the “Nightcap” show on Wednesday, former Denver Broncos tight end Shannon Sharpe made his position on the Watson-Sanders competition clear.

“Prior to this, we saw the thing where Deshaun Watson had many more interceptions than Shedeur. Did this performance from Deshaun make you forget the previous 8, 9, 10 practices? Well, the greatest apology is changed behavior,” Sharpe said.

The Browns acquired Watson with the expectation that he would transform the offense, but injuries and repeated absences have prevented him from delivering on those hopes. Watson’s highest single-season game total is just seven appearances across his first three seasons in Cleveland.
By comparison, Sanders appeared in eight games for the Browns last season. After opening the 2025 season as a backup behind Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel, Sanders eventually earned the starting role. He finished the season completing 56.6% of his passes for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns.
Sanders already showed enough promise to establish himself in this year’s quarterback race. Meanwhile, Monken reiterated earlier this week that both Sanders and Watson are expected to start one of the Browns’ first two preseason games.
With no starter officially named, the upcoming practices will likely play a major role in determining who gets the first opportunity to lead Cleveland when the regular season begins.
