Brock Purdy has built his career on proving doubters wrong, and that mindset hasn’t changed as he enters his fourth season as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback.
From high school overlooked recruit to Mr. Irrelevant to franchise quarterback, Purdy’s journey represents one of the NFL’s most unlikely success stories. Yet even with a massive contract extension and a Super Bowl appearance under his belt, the questions haven’t stopped coming.
How Has Being an Underdog Shaped Brock Purdy’s Career?
Purdy explained that being the underdog has been part of his story during a recent appearance on “The Richard Sherman Podcast.” The pattern started early and never really stopped.
At Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona, Purdy managed to impress despite going up against more recognized programs. However, he was still classified as just a three-star recruit when entering college. At Iowa State, he broke almost every passing-related record before being taken with the final draft pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
“Underdog. That’s been my story, man, from high school, college to the NFL,” Purdy said. “But for me, every single year, all that matters is if I’m leading these guys in this locker room, in this building, this organization, and they trust me here.”
The approach has clearly worked. Purdy became the undisputed starter after taking over the reins in his rookie season, and he earned a five-year, $265 million contract extension this offseason. Now entering his fourth season working with head coach Kyle Shanahan, the 25-year-old believes they’ve found their winning formula.
“We’ve been able to go and show and prove that what we do here, what I do as a quarterback works,” Purdy explained. “We’ve won games, and we’ve been to a Super Bowl. As long as I just continue to focus on where God has me and learn with Kyle and (quarterbacks coach Mick) Lombardi, all my teammates, and keep having their trust and gaining their trust, that’s all that matters.”
That focus includes tuning out external criticism. When asked about dealing with critics, Purdy was direct.
“Everybody’s going to have something to say. That’s the nature of the sport. That’s fine, but I don’t buy into it or listen. If I were to listen to criticism and everything, I wouldn’t be where I’m at today. I’ve had the chip on my shoulder and I go prove myself right every single year.”
What Challenges Will Purdy Face With a New-Look 49ers Offense?
This season will test Purdy’s ability to adapt once again. The 49ers’ offense will look vastly different from the team we last saw, creating new challenges for the quarterback who has thrived on consistency.
After injuries ruined their 2024 season, Purdy and the rest of his team will look to bounce back this year. They have the easiest strength of schedule in the league, per ESPN, but Purdy will need to step up after the team lost several veterans in the offseason.
The most significant change came when the team traded wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders in the offseason. The 49ers also initially released veteran fullback Kyle Juszczyk before bringing him back, creating uncertainty about offensive roles and chemistry.
Additionally, Purdy faces uncertainty with his remaining targets. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is coming back from a torn ACL, while Jauan Jennings is looking for an extension or a trade. These situations could impact the offensive continuity that has been crucial to Purdy’s success.
For a quarterback who has built his reputation on making the most of every opportunity, these challenges represent another chance to prove the doubters wrong. With his track record of overcoming adversity, Purdy seems ready to embrace the underdog role once again.
