‘It’s Tough… We’re Boys’ — Brock Purdy Gets Candid About Replacing Trey Lance As 49ers’ QB1

Even though Brock Purdy took the starting role from Trey Lance, the two remain close, as Purdy opens up about their time on the 49ers.

Brock Purdy’s road to the NFL is well-documented. Known as “Mr. Irrelevant,” Purdy has turned himself into a superstar with his recent five-year, $265 million deal. Over $182 million of that is guaranteed, as Purdy surpassed Trey Lance to take over as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback.

Recently, Purdy sat down with the Bussin’ with the Boys crew to discuss his relationship with Lance.

Brock Purdy Recalls Replacing Trey Lance As QB1, a Man He Grew Very Close to on the 49ers

Lance played six games for San Francisco in 2021, as he threw five touchdowns and two interceptions to go along with his 603 passing yards. That remains the most of his young career, as he hasn’t gotten a true starting opportunity since. While his time as the starter was short-lived, the team knew they had something in Purdy, as they switched gears, a decision that had Purdy ecstatic, but he didn’t know how to react.

“It’s tough because Trey and I are tight. We’re boys, we’re bros,” he said. “When you’re in the locker room, and you have guys that are your competition, you’re boys. Everyone wants to make it this big thing or whatever, but I wanted nothing but the best for him, and I know he wanted the same for me.”

He continued, “That’s just how the business goes, and when it did happen, they announced it right before our preseason game against the Chargers. I didn’t really know how to act or what to think. I was just like, ‘Man, I hope he can go to Dallas and compete and have a great opportunity.’ When you grow with a guy, and you’re in meetings and stuff, you want the best for them.”

During his time in Dallas, Lance completed 25 of his 41 passes as he finished the 2024 season with 266 passing yards and an interception. He hasn’t thrown a touchdown since his 2021 season in San Francisco, as he is now a member of the Los Angeles Chargers. Lance will receive $6.2 million to back up Justin Herbert. Additionally, he’ll have to earn the QB2 spot against Taylor Heinicke.

For the 49ers, it was an easy decision to go with Purdy over Lance. While they may have never given Lance a fair shot at QB, their decision worked out as Purdy took them to a Super Bowl. While they didn’t come out victorious, the team has clearly invested in Purdy as their top guy with the recent contract extension he received. In Week 3 of the preseason, the 49ers host the Chargers and Lance.
