The San Francisco 49ers have locked down their quarterback. The 5x Super Bowl winning team has signed Brock Purdy to a massive five-year, $265 million contract extension. With $182.5 million guaranteed, it also includes a no-trade clause in the deal. However, the surprising bit of news, is that the 25-year-old star, left money on the table.
The popular narrative surrounding the Niners QB, is that he is a ‘nice guy’ who’d be willing to take a ‘pay cut’. Be that as it may, it appears that Purdy had a slightly different approach in getting this deal done.
Brock Purdy Discusses Not Trying To Break the Bank in Contract Extension
While addressing the assembled media, Purdy discussed how he was not attempting to take the 49ers to the woodshed and instead wanted to leave some money available for the other players to bolster the remainder of the roster.
“Look, I have so much respect for everybody in this organization from the top down, and so, I think they know who I am and what I’m about. I don’t know if there was a narrative of ‘Brock’s gonna take a pay cut because he’s a nice guy’… I want to get what I deserve, but also surround myself with guys around me and not take every penny for myself.”
The 49ers were able to use some of the ‘savings’ from the Purdy contract and gave linebacker Fred Warner a three-year extension as the ink dried on the quarterback’s contract extension.
Over his first three seasons in the NFL, he has played in 40 games (36 starts) and has gone 23-13 while completing 722 of 1069 (67.5%) of his passes for 9,518 yards with 64 passing touchdowns to 27 interceptions while also running 127 attempts for 480 yards (3.8 yards per carry) with eight rushing touchdowns.

Departures of significant players from the last season have arguably left the 49ers’ roster less skilled. However, this will be a good test to tell San Francisco that they made the right decision in paying Purdy all this money. The team has the easiest schedule in terms of 2024 win percentage.
This season will be a test for the future of San Francisco as they attempt to remain a threat in the NFC – as they have been the first two seasons with Purdy under center.
