The San Francisco 49ers made a lot of news as the team signed quarterback Brock Purdy to a massive five-year, $265 million contract with $182.5 million guaranteed. This was not too big of a surprise as it was expected to happen at some point, and with the offseason moves, it looked like it would happen before the season started.
Despite not setting any records, Purdy certainly put himself in a strong position. The contract is the fifth-largest in the NFL, and his $53 million average annual value was tied with Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff for seventh place at the time of signing.
The 49ers quarterback has not been vocal about his contract situation, but he is now being rewarded for his work over the first three years in the NFL. He finally broke his silence regarding his contract, so let’s take a closer look at what he said.
Brock Purdy Discusses Contract Talks With the San Francisco 49ers
Purdy was able to make life-changing money by officially inking his deal. Players are typically measured by what the number on the deal says and focus on trying to set records with either the total value, guarantees, or average annual value. Purdy met with the media and discussed his approach to getting this massive contract extension with the 49ers.
“We wanted to make sure we were working together with the organization to set everyone up for success. It wasn’t about me just getting as much money as I could.”
It sounds like Purdy and San Francisco were not focused on ‘winning’ the deal and instead worked together to get a deal that everyone was happy with. Purdy not going into the negotiation trying to set a record and leaving money on the table allowed the 49ers to make more moves, such as signing linebacker Fred Warner to a three-year extension.
Throughout his first three seasons in the NFL, he played 40 games (36 starts) and completed 722 of 1,069 (67.5%) of his passes for 9,518 yards with 64 passing touchdowns to 27 interceptions. Purdy has also played well in the playoffs, as he has a 6:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio in the six postseason games of his young career.

The 49ers have the easiest strength of schedule when looking at the 2024 records. Even though they have an easy 2025 schedule, this season is going to be significant to see what type of quarterback they should expect Purdy to be after a bit of a down 2024 season.
