Brock Purdy Contract Talks Heat Up as 49ers Make Intentions Crystal Clear on Starting QB in 2025

Earlier this week, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch revealed that the club was working toward a contract extension with quarterback Brock Purdy. ESPN NFL analyst Adam Schefter broke the news on X about the latest on Purdy’s situation, something that appears to hint at the former last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft remaining with the 49ers long-term.

Purdy is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is expected to see a massive increase in his annual salary on his next deal. He has provided great cost efficiency to the 49ers, as he has performed at the same level as some elite quarterbacks in the league, yet his highest cap hit so far has been only about $1 million. Next year, Purdy’s cap hit is expected to rise slightly to about $5.2 million.

What Will Brock Purdy’s Next Contract Look Like?

Schefter outlined how the 49ers wanted to keep Purdy with the franchise long-term.

“49ers GM John Lynch about his QB Brock Purdy: ‘We have started negotiations, we’re talking. I won’t go into negotiations, like always is our stance. I want Brock to be our quarterback as long as we’re here and beyond, and we’ll leave it at that,’” he said.

Since entering the league, Purdy has played at an elite quarterback level and deserves to be paid near some of the top players in the entire league.

Though he is more limited than individuals like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Joe Burrow, he has proven to be clutch when it matters in the playoffs and shown time and again that he can handle the advanced 49ers offense.

Purdy has 9,518 passing yards, 72 total touchdowns, and 27 interceptions since becoming the starting quarterback of the 49ers. He has led the team to the Super Bowl, as well as the NFC Championship Game on numerous occasions, proving that he can be one of the very best when he needs to be. The 49ers are 30-16 all-time with Purdy starting as quarterback, according to StatMuse.

The popular sports contract and financial company Spotrac has projected Purdy’s next contract to be around a four-year, $238,966,260 deal, with an average annual value of approximately $59 million. This would make Purdy the second-highest-paid quarterback in the entire league in the current climate and would put him in the same financial category as Dak Prescott, Burrow, Jordan Love, and Trevor Lawrence.
