Brittany Mahomes Reflects on Patrick Mahomes Sr.’s Turning Point

As mentioned by Angela Barbuti of the New York Post, Mahomes told director Kristen Lappas that his father’s February 2024 arrest for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) happened in the days before the Super Bowl and swiftly became a subject of media focus.

As the Chiefs quarterback prepared for his third championship win, he was also fielding questions about his father’s legal troubles. Mahomes said the incident made his father realize “you can’t keep doing the same things.”

Pat ͏Mahomes Sr., a former New York Mets pitcher with ͏prior D͏WI convictions, admitted in the series ͏that the timing and consequences of his actions were especially difficult to process.

He described ͏the moment as “probably the ͏most embarrassing thing” of his͏ life͏, particularly ͏because it forced his͏ son͏ to publicly address his behavior. According to ͏him, that ͏embarrassment became a catalyst for͏ change.

He quickly reached out to Patrick to apologize for disrupting his focus and assured him that ͏alcohol would no longer be ͏an issue in the future. “I haven’t had a drink since then,” he said.

Brittany provided her own perspective on her father-in-law’s commitment to sobriety. She shared that “it finally hit him” that his children and grandchildren were watching his actions closely. She also noted that Pat’s joy in seeing Patrick achieve his dreams motivated him to stay present and supportive.

Patrick affirmed his wife’s point, saying his father’s presence during the past year’s memorable moments meant a great deal. For him, those shared experiences were irreplaceable, and having his father there for them underscored the value of his recovery.

Director La͏ppas͏, who͏ ͏spent 120 hours ͏conducting interviews for ‘The Kingdom,’ said͏ she was surprised by Pat’s willingness to open up about͏ his struggles. She believed his honesty added depth to the audience’s understanding of Patrick Mahomes beyond his role ͏as an athlete.͏

Lappas was granted unprecedented access to the Chiefs’ facilities, including their underground archive room. This was a place no player or coach had entered before. She described the players’ reactions inside “the caves” as reminiscent of “little kids,” capturing an authentic side of the team rarely seen by the public.
