Brendan Sorsby’s decision to enter the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft has become a point of discussion about which teams could take a chance on the talented signal-caller.
One Browns analyst believes Cleveland could emerge as a serious contender, pointing to general manager Andrew Berry’s history of giving talented players second chances.
Daryl Ruiter Predicts Browns GM Andrew Berry Could Target Brendan Sorsby
Following reports that Sorsby intends to enter the Supplemental Draft, Browns analyst Daryl Ruiter of “92.3 The Fan” suggested the quarterback is exactly the type of player Berry has been willing to bet on in the past.
“Andrew Berry looked the other way and traded for Deshaun Watson and gave him $230 million guaranteed,” Ruiter wrote on X. “He is the GM that believes in second chances. Brendan Sorsby is right up his alley.”
Ruiter was referencing arguably the most controversial move of Berry’s tenure. In 2022, the Browns acquired Watson despite the quarterback facing dozens of civil lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct and handed him a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract.
Ruiter went a step further, predicting that Cleveland could attempt to capitalize on Sorsby’s unique situation. “I think he will bid to grab that talent at a discounted draft pick price. Plus lets him use ’27 draft to build around Sorsby.”

Sorsby remains one of the most polarizing prospects in football. The quarterback was initially ruled ineligible by the NCAA after admitting to placing approximately $90,000 in wagers on college and professional sports over a four-year period, including bets involving Indiana football while he was a member of the program.
Despite that controversy, many evaluators still view him as a legitimate NFL prospect. Before opting for the Supplemental Draft, Sorsby was expected to lead Texas Tech after transferring from Cincinnati. He threw for 2,800 yards with 27 touchdowns and five interceptions at Cincinnati in 2025, adding 580 yards and nine scores on the ground. PFSN’s CFB QB Impact Metric ranked him 10th in FBS with an impact score of 88.2.

While Ruiter believes Berry could be interested, comments from within the Browns organization suggest there may be differing opinions on the quarterback.
When asked about Sorsby’s situation on 92.3 The Fan last week, Berry emphasized the importance of evaluating both the mistake and the player’s response afterward.
“Is it a bad person or did they make a bad decision?” Berry said. “What are they doing after the fact to correct the behavior?.. Is this a pattern of decision-making and if so, have they done something to stop the pattern?”

Berry also pointed to Sorsby’s decision to seek treatment for his gambling addiction as a positive step while adding that “we could all stand to use a little bit more grace.”
Head coach Todd Monken, however, sounded significantly more cautious when discussing the possibility of adding Sorsby earlier this month.
“I think that’s a slippery slope,” Monken said. “Kind of a tough angle to go down that road and think that’s going to be your franchise quarterback.”
Monken acknowledged that any decision would ultimately rest with Berry and the front office. For now, Sorsby’s NFL future depends on whether the league approves his Supplemental Draft application. If that happens, the Browns could become one of the most fascinating teams to watch, given Berry’s history.
The bigger question would be whether Cleveland should make that move. Unlike some quarterback-needy teams, the Browns already have a crowded room featuring Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, and rookie Taylen Green. Adding another developmental passer would create even more competition at a position that is hardly lacking bodies.
