The WNBA has been mired in controversy lately. Some of it has even turned political. NFL players know that battle all too well, having lived through plenty of off-field discourse themselves.
Yet, the WNBA is dealing with a unique situation, where there’s been criticism and disconnect on the subject of transgender people competing in women’s sports. Now a former NFL player is calling for action in a way some may not expect.
Ex-NFL DT to WNBA: Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is
Some, like popular Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, don’t believe that transgender people should be competing alongside women in athletic events. Of course, not everyone agrees.
One person who does agree with Cunningham’s stance is former NFL defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko.
“Let’s go @WNBA,” Fehoko said. “Y’all wanna include everyone, right? @minnesotalynx. I see a certified 20/20 award-winning player for you to sign. What’s the hold up? Let’s go. Put your money where your mouth is. Stand on business. All that shirt wearing it’s time to put up or shut up.”

While Fehoko is not a household name, he did play three seasons in the NFL with the Los Angeles Chargers from 2020 to 2022, though he’s arguably been more involved on social media ever since, chiming in wherever he sees fit.
As for him calling upon the WNBA to sign Julie Tétart? Tétart admits there would be interest in the WNBA if they were interested.
Yet, Tétart is already 34 years old. Making the transition from competing in France to the WNBA wouldn’t be an insignificant step. Though others, like Diana Taurasi, managed to compete into her 40s, so it’s not like it hasn’t been done before.
However, if a WNBA team did start seriously pursuing a contract with Tétart, the league might have a full-blown controversy on its hands. As they’ve proven with just discussions surrounding transgender athletes competing with women, there would be even more discourse if the league was directly faced with that challenge.
With physicality and fair foul calls already being a sticking point in the league, Tétart’s introduction would surely get fans riled up all over again.
