2024 Failure for the San Francisco 49ers, Looking for Good Things in 2025

The 49ers had a difficult season last year. After coming so close to a Super Bowl in 2023, finishing 6-11 and missing the playoffs was a huge letdown. Key player injuries, contract holdouts, and the difficulty of a shorter offseason left everyone feeling a little worn out.

Aiyuk’s holdout during training camp grabbed headlines, but it ended with a big contract extension: four years, $120 million, with $76 million guaranteed. It was a win for Aiyuk, but unfortunately, his season was cut short when he tore both his ACL and MCL in Week 7.

The 49ers’ offense took a serious hit after that injury. Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle will be under a lot of pressure to keep things going in the season’s opening games without Aiyuk and with Deebo Samuel shipped away. The offense missed Aiyuk’s speed and ability to make big plays in crucial situations.

Kyle Shanahan recently opened up about the team’s injury situation and said that all of the players recovering from ACL injuries, including Aiyuk, are on track to be ready around Week 6. Shanahan was clear there’s some wiggle room in the timeline, but it’s a good sign for a player with such an important role in the offense.

Aiyuk has always been a favorite target of quarterback Brock Purdy, and when he’s healthy, he can change games with his speed and playmaking ability. With Samuel gone, the 49ers will rely on McCaffrey and Kittle early in the season, but having Aiyuk back midseason could turn things around for the team’s passing game.

For the 49ers, Aiyuk’s return is more than simply the return of a single player; it represents a team’s identity being returned to normal. If he’s able to make his return as intended, his offensive prowess will help the team return to full strength in the NFC.

Until then, the team and fans will be counting the weeks, eagerly waiting to see one of their brightest stars back in action.
