The New York Jets quarterback, Geno Smith, is back in the spotlight after another police encounter in Florida.
The latest incident marks his third reported interaction with law enforcement over the last three months, adding another off-field story involving the veteran quarterback as training camp approaches.
Geno Smith Cited for Speeding by Florida Police
According to the New York Post, Smith’s most recent stop came from the Davie Police Department at 11:20 a.m. on July 6. Officers accused the Jets signal-caller of driving 25 mph above the posted speed limit near his home in Davie, Fla.
The incident quickly drew attention after bodycam footage surfaced online. The video captured the officer praising the quarterback’s ride before discussing the alleged violation.
“All right, sir,” the policeman said to Smith, according to the video. “Beautiful car. Seventy miles an hour, man, that’s too fast for 45.”
Then, the officer asked Smith for his driver’s license. However, the quarterback explained that he did not have it with him because it was inside his nearby residence.

“I live right here; my license and everything is in my house,” Smith said before he also told the officer that the vehicle belonged to a friend.
The conversation remained calm as police officers worked to confirm his information. Once the officer finished gathering Smith’s details, he reminded the quarterback that Florida law requires drivers to carry a physical license while operating a vehicle.
Smith acknowledged the mistake without arguing. “My bad,” he replied before the officer issued two separate citations.

After the incident, Smith received citations for unlawful speed and for failing to have his driver’s license available during the traffic stop. As per reports, Smith has to pay a $400 fine.
Smith’s first police encounter happened in March. That encounter became a sports headline not only because of a traffic citation but also because of his tense exchange with the officer.
During the stop, Smith challenged the officer and suggested he should “do his job better,” a moment that quickly spread across social media and fueled public discussion.’
His second encounter (which happened in late June) was a battery investigation. A woman claiming to be Smith’s ex-girlfriend alleged that the quarterback assaulted her, damaged her computer, and stole money from her car.
Following a review of the footage, the Florida police assigned detectives to the case, and the investigation remains active.
While his off-field attention continues to grow, the Jets are preparing for a fresh start with Smith as their quarterback.
The Jets acquired Smith earlier this offseason to be a bridge at QB. In the meantime, the franchise will target its long-term answer at quarterback during the 2027 NFL Draft if the opportunity presents itself.
Now, the Jets will shift their focus to training camp, which will begin in roughly two weeks. Amid that, Smith’s repeated off-field incidents create another distraction for the franchise. So they will hope Smith can keep the attention on football once camp officially begins.
