The San Francisco 49ers’ standoff with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has been one of the biggest storylines of the offseason.
Over the past few months, Aiyuk has repeatedly criticized the organization and general manager John Lynch on Instagram. He also made it clear that he no longer wants any future business with the 49ers and instead wishes to join the Washington Commanders.
With tensions continuing to rise, Sports Illustrated insider Albert Breer weighed in on where things stand between the 49ers and the wide receiver.
Albert Breer Urges Brandon Aiyuk and His Camp to Find a Solution to 49ers Standoff
In his latest report, Breer suggested the situation has reached a concerning point and called on Aiyuk’s inner circle to step in.
“I hope Brandon Aiyuk has people around him who are willing to tell him what he needs to hear,” Breer wrote. “His story gets more bizarre by the minute, and people who were concerned about him before the 2025 season appear to have been justified.”
The current standoff looks even more surprising when considering how much San Francisco invested in Aiyuk not long ago. After a lengthy contract hold-in during the 2024 offseason, he signed a four-year, $120 million extension that included $76 million guaranteed.
The deal came after a dominant 2023 campaign, when the PFN WR Impact Metric ranked him as the No. 6 wide receiver in the NFL. During that season, Aiyuk caught 75 passes on 105 targets for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns while posting a 21.6% target share.

However, everything changed after a knee injury ended his 2024 season early. The fallout from that setback, combined with ongoing disputes, led the 49ers to void roughly $27 million in guaranteed money for 2026.
Then things got more heated between Aiyuk and the 49ers when the team placed the wide receiver on the reserve/left squad list in Dec. 2025, officially ending his 2025 campaign.
Since then, both parties have been in a standoff. Although Aiyuk remains under contract with the San Francisco 49ers, there is still no clear path toward resolving the ongoing dispute.
During a recent press conference, general manager Lynch addressed Aiyuk’s current status and made it clear where the organization stands as training camp moves forward.
“Brandon is on a ‘left squad’ designation,” Lynch said. “As such, he’s not on our 90-man roster. I’m personally, and we as an organization, are going to focus on the players that are here. So, I don’t have anything to say on that, anything to add on that. We wish him well. We wish his family well.”
For now, the 49ers still control the situation. Aiyuk has not filed for reinstatement from the reserve/left squad list, so the 49ers have no obligation to release him or continue paying him.
The 49ers could have traded him months ago, but no team has shown interest in absorbing the contract of a receiver who has missed nearly two years.
That leaves the former first-round pick stuck in limbo, with his NFL future and playing career on hold indefinitely.
