Legendary head coach Bill Belichick has long been known for his curt and terse interactions with the media, particularly during press conferences. However, those appearances were at least mandatory question-and-answer sessions with reporters, necessary evils as part of his responsibilities as an NFL head coach.
In contrast, his recent interview with “CBS Sunday Morning” appeared to be a voluntary sit-down — one that quickly turned awkward.
Interview With CBS Sunday Morning Quickly Gets Awkward
The pre-taped interview got uncomfortable when CBS anchor Tony Dokoupil asked Belichick about his parting of ways with the New England Patriots, a team the future Hall of Famer coached from 2000 to 2023. Specifically, Dokoupil asked if Belichick felt he was treated with dignity and respect when he was let go by Patriots owner Robert Kraft.
“Yeah, well, it was a mutual decision for us to part ways,” Belichick said.
Dokoupil, seeking to clarify a previous comment from Kraft, asked Belichick if he was fired.
Belichick responded: “It was a mutual decision.”
Dokoupil also asked Belichick about his romantic relationship with 24-year-old Jordan Hudson. Eyebrows were raised when the 73-year-old first went public about the former cheerleader at Bridgewater State University.
Belichick replied that he has never cared what other people think.
“Never been too worried about what everybody else thinks,” Belichick said. “Just try to do what I feel like is best for me and what’s right.”
Dokoupil followed up by asking how the couple met. Hudson, who was on the interview set but sitting off-camera, then jumped in to say they are “not talking about this.”
Even innocuous questions seem to garner an awkward silence. When Dokoupil turned the topic to Belichick’s new presence on Instagram — he has posted several revealing photos of Hudson, arm-in-arm with the legendary coach — and how he felt about the comments under his social media posts, things got weird again.
“So, I’m on some of those social media platforms,” Belichick said, “but I honestly don’t follow them.”
Belichick Announces UNC Will Be Opening 2026 Season in Ireland
As part of his responsibilities as head football coach at the University of North Carolina, Belichick shared news with his team that the Tar Heels will be traveling to Ireland in 2026 to take on Texas Christian University in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. That game will be the season opener for the 2026 season.
It would not be a new experience for the veteran head coach who traveled overseas during his run in New England. Belichick has gone 3-1 in international games, with games played in Mexico, England, and Germany. The lone loss came when the New England Patriots lost to the Indianapolis Colts 10-6 in Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, in 2023.
