Top Best Ball Options To Draft in 2024

Kyren Williams, RB, Los Angeles Rams

I want to talk about Kyren Williams. In 2023, the Los Angeles Rams gave us not one but two of the most impactful waiver wire pickups in the history of fantasy football. There will be a ton of discourse on Puka Nacua between now and prime fantasy draft season. Let’s talk about Williams.

Based on what Williams did in 2023, he should be the overall RB2 behind Christian McCaffrey. I think it’s safe to say he’s not going to be drafted there. The reason is understandable; he was a waiver wire pickup. There were definitely some really sharp analysts out there who pinpointed Williams as a worthwhile dart to throw at the end of 2023 fantasy drafts, but not a single person can say they saw this coming.

An injury limited Williams to just 12 games, but in those 12 games, only CMC was a better fantasy back. Williams averaged an impressive 5.0 yards per carry. He scored 15 touchdowns. He was active in the passing game with an 11.5% target share.

In an era where very, very few running backs play all three downs, Williams led the league with an 84% snap share and was fourth with a 78.4% opportunity share. His 21.3 fantasy points per game were good for an overall RB2 finish.

The Rams need to upgrade their running back depth behind Williams. The combination of Ronnie Rivers and Royce Freeman isn’t good enough. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean whoever they sign or draft is going to have a role other than to take a series or two per game like Rivers did when both he and Williams were healthy.

I don’t really see a scenario where Williams is merely a good pick. He either has the same role he had last season and should’ve gone in the top half of the first round or he loses his job.

Sean McVay has always used one back. He’s just never seemed to care who that back is. Right now, it’s Williams. Could that change? Absolutely. The Rams have no allegiance to a Day 3 running back who did nothing as a rookie.

From a fantasy perspective, Williams is the exact type of running back we are supposed to avoid. Historically, running backs who were waiver wire pickups the previous season and are now going in the top 4-5 rounds are bad investments.

Of course, we’ve never seen a waiver wire pickup be as good as Williams. He’s going to be polarizing. I don’t have a clear answer in February, but there’s value to be had — either in drafting or fading him — depending on how things play out.

Garrett Wilson, WR, New York Jets

For the second consecutive year, Garrett Wilson is being drafted around the 1-2 turn as if he is an elite wide receiver. For the second consecutive year, fantasy managers are paying for the breakout that hasn’t happened yet.

Wilson is a fascinating study of how fantasy managers view injury risk. No one has Wilson, who has played in all 17 games in each of his first two seasons, as an injury concern. We also have assessed his talent and determined that if he gets quality quarterback play, he’s going to be an elite fantasy wide receiver.

I agree with all of these things. But does Aaron Rodgers’ injury status not matter?

Fantasy managers seem very willing to cast aside any risk that a 40-year-old coming off a torn Achilles 1) may not be able to stay healthy, and 2) might not be as good as he was when we last saw him play football.

I’m not here to tell anyone to fade Wilson — I certainly won’t be — but I also play fantasy football to chase upside, and I believe Wilson has a whole lot of it. After all, the guy posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons mostly with Zach Wilson throwing him passes.

Garrett Wilson commanded a 30.1% target share last season. He also had a 10.2 aDOT (average depth of target). The inefficiency led to an anemic 1.56 yards per route run, 54th in the league.

Now, imagine Wilson gets high-level QB play. His aDOT increases to inside the top 20. His catch rate goes up because his catchable target rate goes up. Throughout all of this, he maintains a target share of around 30%. How is Wilson not a clear WR1 in fantasy?

If you buy the talent, as I do, then the theory on Wilson comes down to how confident you are in Rodgers’ ability to stay healthy and play at a high level. I definitely want Wilson on some of my teams this season, but it’s up to you to decide whether you think it’s worth it to pay for a near-best-case scenario in advance.

Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, TBD

In a league where nothing is for certain, I believe Marvin Harrison Jr. is a sure thing. I expect him to be treated as a top-five dynasty asset as early as 2025 and be a perennially top 18-ish pick in redraft leagues for the better part of the next decade (beginning in 2025).

On Nov. 25, 2023, I tweeted out a prediction regarding Harrison that is looking very likely to come true.

How worth it is it to take a rookie wide receiver in what I expect to be the third round?

Well, consider the best wide receiver prospects in recent memory. Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase were both worth second-round picks based on their rookie season performance. Harrison is widely viewed as a better prospect than both of them or at least on the same level.

Of course, the situation matters. By no means am I comparing Drake London or Puka Nacua to Harrison as a prospect, but the purpose of bringing up those two players is to illustrate how important a situation can be.

Jefferson and Chase were elite prospects who landed in pretty good situations. Nacua was an unheralded prospect who landed in an ideal situation. London was an elite prospect who landed in arguably the worst possible situation.

Whichever team drafts Harrison matters. If he goes to New England or Chicago, I think he’d fall into the fourth round, and I’d be very concerned that he won’t be worth it. But if he lands in Arizona, for example, it’s wheels up.

Given Harrison’s talent, I’m willing to embrace the uncertainty of his landing spot and get him on rosters in early Best Ball drafts.
