The Cleveland Browns are preparing to take on the Baltimore Ravens in Week 11. One man who is almost always watching Browns games is former quarterback Bernie Kosar. Kosar is a Cleveland legend who remains committed to the Browns, but the former Pro Bowler will not be in attendance for Sunday’s game, and there’s a good reason for that.
Bernie Kosar Could Be Getting a New Liver
Kosar, who has cirrhosis, has been waiting for a liver transplant for over a year now. On Sunday morning, Kosar took to social media to provide an encouraging health update ahead of the Week 11 matchups.
Kosar posted a video from a hospital bed on Sunday. The quarterback shared that there’s a “real chance at the liver transplant happening at the same time,” as the Browns-Ravens game today.
“It’s a great morning at University Hospital,” said Kosar. “I’m really nervous, really excited. I almost never miss an NFL game, but I think I’m going to have a really good reason.”
Kosar followed up the video with a post thanking the Browns organization and fanbase for all of the support he’s received. As of this writing, Kosar is still awaiting word on whether or not he will be able to receive the transplant on Sunday.
Kosar has dealt with several health problems since his playing days ended. The quarterback deals with lingering symptoms from several concussions he suffered and was also diagnosed with early symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease in 2024.
Since early 2024, Kosar has been on the waiting list for a new liver. Sunday’s news could hopefully signal the end of the quarterback’s long wait and ensure he’s around for many more Browns games.
As a player, Kosar was with the Browns from 1985 to 1993. Kosar was a fan-favorite due to his toughness and being a native of Ohio. The quarterback threw for 21,904 yards, 116 touchdowns, and 81 interceptions as a Brown. Only Brian Sipe and Otto Graham threw for more passing yards as a Brown than Kosar.
After his days in Cleveland, Kosar went on to spend one season with the Dallas Cowboys, where he won Super Bowl XXVIII as the backup quarterback, and three seasons with the Miami Dolphins.

Since his playing career ended, Kosar has been a permanent fixture in the Cleveland area. The legendary Brown has worked as a consultant for the Browns and has also hosted his own talk show.
Let’s hope we can soon report on a successful operation for the legend.
