What Does Joe Burrow’s Injury Mean for the Bengals?

Burrow suffered a Grade 3 turf toe injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars and was placed on Injured Reserve this week. That designation ensures he will miss at least the next three months. His surgery has not been scheduled, and Taylor admitted the timeline remains unclear. “I don’t have the timing on that yet. It may have been decided this morning, but I don’t have it yet. So when I do I’ll let you all know,” Taylor said.

If Burrow does return this year, he would be the first NFL player this century to undergo turf toe surgery and play again in the same season. While Taylor confirmed the Bengals are not ruling out that possibility, it remains a steep challenge. In the meantime, the team must prepare to move forward without its leader under center.

With Burrow sidelined, Jake Browning takes the reins of Cincinnati’s offense. The 29-year-old has already built some familiarity with the system, starting seven games in 2023 when Burrow was out. During that stretch, Browning threw 11 touchdown passes and notched three 300-yard performances. Taylor expressed confidence in his ability to step into the starting role.

“His voice is a little bit louder, obviously, with thoughts that he has, and the team has gotten familiar with him as well,” the coach explained. He added, “So good, it’s his first day of install today. We talked a little bit last night as we were game planning. So he’s had a great attitude, and so far, so good.”

Cincinnati has also made several roster moves to provide more depth at the position. Brett Rypien was signed to the active roster, while Sean Clifford and Mike White joined the practice squad. These additions help stabilize the quarterback room as the team builds on its early-season momentum.

At 2-0, the Bengals have started their season with promise. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Burrow’s status, the franchise remains determined to push toward the playoffs. Taylor’s comments underscore the balance between reality and optimism: the Bengals must compete without their star, but the possibility of his late-season return lingers as a decisive motivating factor.
