Bears TE Colston Loveland Gushes Over HC Ben Johnson After First Day Of Rookie Minicamp

Colston Loveland is expected to contribute to the Chicago Bears’ offense immediately. It was a bit of a surprise to some that the Bears took him 10th overall, but considering new head coach Ben Johnson’s success with tight end Matt LaPorta in Denver, it makes sense. Loveland could be his new LaPorta.

Coupling Loveland with tight end Cole Kmet can give second-year quarterback Caleb Williams plenty to work with in the short and intermediate areas of the field. He’s described as a wide receiver in a tight end’s body, making him a dynamic target, which complements Kmet’s strengths as a sure-handed receiver and blocker.

How is Loveland Integrating Into the Bears Organization?

His transition into the pros seems to be moving along well, and he is especially impressed with his new head coach.

Jori Parys reports, “Colston Loveland says he’s already a ‘big fan’ of Ben Johnson after first practice of rookie minicamp.“His spirit, his energy, he’s ready to go, ready to take this to the top.”The TE is continuing his shoulder rehab but calls mental reps just as important. @cbschicago”

The Bears have more talent at the skill positions than they’ve had in a while. Receivers Rome Odunze and DJ Moore are expected to stretch defenses while Loveland and Kmet take care of the mid-range. They also beefed up the offensive line by signing guards Joe Thuney (All-Pro), Jonah Jackson (Pro Bowler), and center Drew Dalman.

Expectations for the Bears in 2025 are very high. Johnson’s high-powered offense and ability to rejuvenate Jared Goff’s career have fans hoping he can unlock Caleb Williams’ unlimited potential.

The position has been a thorn in the franchise’s side for a long time. Since 1951, only five Bears QBs have made it to the Pro Bowl: Johnny Lujack (1951, 1952), Ed Brown (1955, 1956), Bill Wade (1963), Jim McMahon (1985), and Mitch Trubisky (2018). Sid Luckman is their only Hall of Fame QB and played in the 1940s.

The Bears last made the playoffs in 2020 when they lost to the New Orleans Saints in the Wild Card 21-9. The closest they’ve come to a playoff win since 2010 was in 2018, when Cody Parkey missed a last-second field goal attempt dubbed the Double Doink.

It would be an understatement to say that fans are hoping this is their moment of deliverance.
