NFL World Slams Bears’ Ownership After Schefter Claims Chicago Can’t Afford Maxx Crosby Trade: ‘Sell the Damn Team’

Bears fans demand ownership sell the team after Adam Schefter reported Chicago is 'broke' and can't afford a Maxx Crosby trade.

The Chicago Bears were one of many NFL teams that might have been looking to add Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby. But there was one issue that kept Bears management from doing so: Cash. At least that’s what ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter is reporting.

Fans Rip Chicago Bears Ownership Over Maxx Crosby Cash Comments

On Friday, Johnathan Wood, who is an occasional writer for Windy City Gridiron, posted his thoughts about the situation revolving around the Bears and Crosby. It is based on what the prominent NFL insider said recently.

ESPN’s Mike Greenberg asked Schefter if he felt the Bears were looking to sign Crosby. He replied, “The Bears don’t have any more money right now, Greeny. They’re broke. They’re out of money. And so I know people love all this and coming up with concoctions and imaginations and scenarios where a team like the Bears could come up with a player like Max Crosby.”

Sharing the video, Wood wrote, “Schefter just straight said the Bears aren’t going after Crosby because they don’t have the cash. Not cap space, cash. If you can’t afford to run an NFL team, sell the damn team. Bears nuking a contention window because they can’t afford to spend what it takes.”

Caleb Williams Fan Club’s account on X, which states that it is a Caleb Williams and Chicago Bears fan, also didn’t hold back in scrutinizing the Bears’ franchise. “If Adam Schefter is saying that the Bears have no money, referring to cash, not cap space… THEN SELL THE DAMN TEAM,” the account posted.

Nick Whalen, a co-host of the “Bear With Us” podcast that focuses on Bears news, had a lot to say about the Bears-Crosby matter. Whalen posted his lengthy thoughts on the matter on X.

“‘The Bears don’t have anymore money right now. They’re broke. They’re out of money.’ Schefter didn’t even differentiate if he’s referencing salary cap space or ownership cash on hand. But people are running wild with the old ‘cash poor owners’ based on 5 seconds of a clip,” Whalen wrote.

“‘Bears ownership will never fire a coach in-season’ -did it last year … ‘Bears ownership can’t afford Ben Johnson’ -Paid him $13M per yr … ‘But I believe Adam Schefter’ -Okay, well he used the term broke. Which can mean bankrupt,” Whalen continued.

“Do you think Bears ownership will need to file for bankruptcy? Or do you think he was embellishing the story? -Schefter also said the Bears would get a 2nd round pick for Justin Fields ‘Poles was crazy for spending all that money for Dayo and Jarrett’ vs ‘Now they can’t spend money on DL because of ownership cash’ -Pick a lane,” Whalen said.

Swift Sports Network, which covers the Bears, also called out Bears ownership and Bears general manager Ryan Poles in a post on X on Friday.

“Adam Schefter is saying the #Bears don’t have the ‘CASH’ to make big moves,” the account posted. “If true, Ryan Poles is handcuffed by ownership because this is NOT a Cap Space issue or an ability to CREATE cap space. He says ‘CASH’.”

Aaron Leming, who writes about the Bears for 247Sports at Bear Report, posted on X, “Talked about it a few days ago: Cap space & cash spending are two different things. #Bears ownership does not have the cash flow most other NFL owners do. With a Caleb Williams deal on the horizon & an expensive stadium, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.”

At this point, Crosby is back getting ready for the 2026 NFL season with the Raiders.
