Baltimore Predicted to Make Classic ‘Ravens Move’ By Reuniting With 3-Time Pro Bowler

The Baltimore Ravens could make their pass rush even better by signing a name from their past who can ferociously attack from the outside.

The Baltimore Ravens already have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL. Their defense dominated in 2024, ranking first against the run and second in sacks. Baltimore’s front seven is loaded with playmakers, especially at linebacker, where Kyle Van Noy, Roquan Smith, Trent Simpson, and Odafe Oweh form a core strengthened by fourth-round pick Teddye Buchanan.

But there’s a proven pass rusher sitting on the free agent market who could slide into Baltimore’s system like he never left.

Why Would Jadaveon Clowney Be Perfect for the Ravens?

Cory Woodroof of USA Today’s For The Win believes the Ravens signing linebacker Jadaveon Clowney would be classic Baltimore.

“The Ravens adding Clowney as a mercenary rusher at this point in the season would be such a Ravens move,” Woodroof writes. “Clowney has played there before, and we like the idea of a reunion for both sides quite a bit.”

Clowney’s numbers from 2024 tell only part of the story. He managed just 46 combined tackles and 5.5 sacks, but those stats came while playing on a terrible Carolina Panthers defense. Despite the team’s struggles, he was far and away their best defensive player at age 32.

The veteran pass rusher still brings the skills that made him a household name. He can rush off the edge with ferocity, beat tackles to the outside, or loop inside and blow through running backs in pass protection. His closing speed remains intact, and his footwork is still excellent.

The former first-overall pick from 2014 isn’t slowing down, but he wouldn’t need to carry a heavy load in Baltimore. The Ravens are developing a young linebacker corps, which means Clowney wouldn’t have to play every down.

This setup would be perfect for both sides. Baltimore could save Clowney for obvious passing situations and third downs, keeping him fresh and maximizing his impact. He’d have plenty of gas left in the tank for what the Ravens hope will be a deep playoff push.

The fit makes sense from every angle. Clowney is chasing a ring, and the Ravens desperately want to return to the Super Bowl. With quarterback Lamar Jackson in his prime, Baltimore appears willing to bring in any player who can help them get over the hump.

Several contenders will likely pursue Clowney, including the Ravens, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, and other top-tier teams. He represents a valuable year-to-year asset who can be signed at a reasonable price without disrupting a team’s salary cap structure.

Clowney brings the experience and pass-rushing ability that championship teams need. The Ravens could do far worse than making this type of mercenary signing to boost their chances for Jackson’s elusive first Super Bowl appearance.
