Baker Mayfield Injury Update: Buccaneers Star Suffers Health Scare Ahead of NFL’s Preseason Games

Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ star quarterback Baker Mayfield has suffered an injury in training camp, disrupting preparations for the upcoming season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield’s practice schedule received a disruption. Reps in training camp matter for quarters, even veterans, who either need to knock the metaphorical dust off, learn new schemes, or develop chemistry with free agent signees or rookies.

As a result, any time off during the process sets the timeline. Find out the reason for Mayfield’s delay in getting back on the field.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield Will Miss Practice

Last season, Mayfield enjoyed a career year, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns, completing 71.4% of his throws. The former top pick put any notion of doubters calling him a bust to rest.

As a result of his stellar play, the Bucs won the NFC South division title, posting a 10-7 record. Not to mention, the success quelled any fears of what a post-Tom Brady existence would look like. Now missing practice, Mayfield will need to wait to rejoin his teammates. NFL reporter Tom Pelissero provides the update.

“Bucs QB Baker Mayfield won’t practice today after suffering a contusion on his throwing hand Thursday, per source. Mayfield underwent scans as a precaution and was ruled out of a more significant injury. He’s day to day.”

While that report does not seem like daunting news, these reps take on a different meaning for the 29-year-old. His offensive coordinator, Liam Coen, left for the head coaching job with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Many credit Coen for almost single-handedly turning Mayfield into a better passer.

As a result of the departure, Mayfield will need to implement the new offensive coordinator, Josh Grizzard’s approach. In his first year as a coordinator, Grizzard probably wants to put his stamp on the offense. Last year, he worked as the pass game coordinator, working exclusively with quarterbacks on developing a process.

A disciple and former assistant to Mike McDaniel and Adam Gase, you can guess he wants to tinker with the passing game. Mayfield needs these practice reps to get a grasp of the new installations.

While the division crown and playoff berth carry weight, Mayfield and the Buccaneers want more. In a conference where Detroit, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles envision making deep playoff runs, the Bics must prove they can get to that level. Moreover, regular-season games against the aforementioned NFC standouts can determine playoff seedings.

Granted, a hand contusion, if neither serious nor deep, should not set Mayfield back too far; getting back on the field as soon as possible becomes a top priority. After the contusion heals, can Mayfield and the Bucs learn Grizzard’s new wrinkles and not miss a beat?
