Baker Mayfield Speaks On the Return of Chris Godwin and Tristan Wirfs

With key players returning and young talent ready to step up, Tampa Bay fans have plenty to look forward to.

“Bringing back the whole O-line, obviously some injuries, Tristan Wirfs and Chris Godwin, we’ll see when they’re ready to go,” Mayfield said. “We’re ready to roll, hit the ground running Week 1. I’m excited about it. Emeka [Egbuka] coming in and being a guy, even though he’s a rookie, doesn’t act like one, doesn’t handle himself like one. He’s a true professional.”

That’s where rookie Emeka Egbuka comes into the frame. He brings offensive firepower that can help when injuries hit and gives Tampa Bay a good problem: too many weapons to get on the field simultaneously.

The Buccaneers got good news when All-Pro left tackle Wirfs was officially activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. He won’t be ready for Week 1, but coach Todd Bowles said he’s making solid progress and could return as early as Week 3 or 4.

Godwin, who missed much of last season with a dislocated ankle, has been cleared to return to the 53-man roster, giving Tampa Bay another boost.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Serious Contender If Team Remains Healthy

Tampa Bay is expected to be a serious contender in the NFC South. Continuity on offense, a revamped pass rush, and the return of key players all point to another playoff run. The main concerns are Mayfield cutting down on turnovers and keeping crucial players healthy throughout the season.

The Buccaneers had a strong 2024, finishing 10-7, winning their fourth straight NFC South title, and making their fifth consecutive playoff appearance. While they fell in the Wild Card round to the Washington Commanders, the team’s offense made history, averaging over five yards per carry while completing 70% of passes, a career-best year for Mayfield.

If Tampa Bay can stay healthy and build on last year’s momentum, many analysts see the Buccaneers as a potential Super Bowl contender. With Mayfield leading the way, veterans returning, and young players like Egbuka ready to contribute, Tampa Bay is set for an exciting 2025 season.
