‘An A+’ —  Falcons Earn High Praise for Reuniting Brothers Avieon Terrell, AJ Terrell in Secondary

Avieon Terrell and his brother A.J. Terrell will anchor the Atlanta Falcons secondary together after a celebrated NFL draft pick.

The Atlanta Falcons made one of the more feel-good picks of Day 2, selecting Avieon Terrell at No. 48 overall and reuniting him with his older brother, A.J. Terrell. It is the kind of move that blends football value with a storyline fans can immediately latch onto. But beyond the family connection, the Falcons are being praised for landing a polished, scheme-versatile corner who could contribute right away.

Why Instincts and Technique Drive Avieon Terrell’s Value

Terrell built his own reputation at Clemson, even while carrying a recognizable last name. According to PFSN’s scouting report, he posted 2 interceptions and 21 pass breakups over his final two seasons, along with 8 forced fumbles using his knack for “peanut punches.”

While he may not match his brother’s size-speed profile, evaluators consistently pointed to his technique, instincts, and versatility as traits that raise his floor. That shows up in the numbers as well, with a C+ grade and 79.2 score in PFSN’s CFB LB Impact Metrics.

That combination of instincts and polish is exactly what stood out to analysts during the selection.

“I would have picked Ponds,” said NFL draft analyst Ian Cummings on PFSN’s “Football Debate Club“.

“I think, you know, watching the film, like Jacob said, you know, he’s such an instinctive, intelligent player, and it really makes up for a lot of the, you know, athletic, even athletic deficiencies.”

It is a fair critique in a class loaded with traits-heavy prospects. Terrell is not the player who jumps off the screen in testing, and his Relative Athletic Score raised some eyebrows. But the Falcons were clearly betting on what shows up on tape more than what shows up on a spreadsheet.

Cummings continued to point out the context behind those athletic concerns.

“I think he tweaked his hamstring on his pro day too. So you wonder if maybe he wasn’t at 100% even though I don’t think he’s an elite athlete on film, I do think the vertical speed does show up as a slight deficiency.”

That balance is key. The limitations are real, particularly at high speeds.

But so is the ability to process routes quickly, stay attached in coverage, and make plays on the ball. In a league that increasingly values coverage versatility, Terrell checks a lot of boxes.

How the Falcons Lean Into Fit, Family, and Immediate Impact with Terrell

The bigger picture for Atlanta is how cleanly Terrell fits into their defense. He brings the ability to line up both inside and outside, operate in press-man or zone, and contribute as a turnover creator. That versatility gives the Falcons options as they continue to build out their secondary.

And then there is the family angle. Pairing Avieon with A.J. is not just a headline; it has real on-field implications.

Chemistry, communication, and familiarity can accelerate development, especially for a young defensive back adjusting to the NFL level.

Cummings’ overall evaluation still reflects that balance between value and preference.

“I would have picked Ponds,” he said again, reinforcing that there were other directions available. But even within that, the acknowledgment of Terrell’s instincts and intelligence underscores why Atlanta felt comfortable making the call.
