Are the Lions Playing Their Starters Tonight vs. the Falcons? A Look at Detroit’s Plan for Preseason Week 1

The Detroit Lions will be the first team to play their second preseason game and we break down the players to look out for against the Atlanta Falcons.

Detroit knows what it feels like to watch championship dreams slip away. Last season, the Lions’ title hopes crumbled when injuries struck their key players, including pass-rushing star Aidan Hutchinson. Now, with a new season approaching and both coordinators gone, the Lions face a crucial test of depth and resilience.

Tonight’s preseason matchup against the Atlanta Falcons offers the perfect stage for players fighting to prove they belong on a Super Bowl contender.

How Much Will Quarterback Jared Goff and Key Starters Play Against Atlanta?

Head coach Dan Campbell preaches toughness and determination, but he won’t gamble with his most valuable assets in a preseason game. Quarterback Jared Goff will sit this one out completely, not even suiting up for the contest.

Instead, third-year quarterback Hendon Hooker gets his moment to shine as he battles Kyle Allen for the primary backup role behind Goff. Hooker managed four series last week, completing 3 of 6 passes for 18 yards and an interception. Allen will also see action as both quarterbacks look to separate themselves in the competition.

Campbell enters his fifth season leading the Lions, facing his biggest adjustment yet. Life without offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn  means new offensive coordinator John Morton and new defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard need every opportunity to fine-tune their systems before the regular season begins.

The main starters on both sides of the ball will watch from the sideline, creating opportunities for depth players to make their case for expanded roles.

Which Young Players Will Get Their Chance to Shine?

All eyes turn to the rookies tonight. Defensive lineman Tyleik Williams and guard Tate Ratledge, the Lions’ top two picks from the 2025 NFL Draft, could make their Detroit debuts after sitting out the first preseason game. Campbell has indicated he plans to play them at some point during the preseason but has not decided if tonight’s game against the Falcons will be their moment.

On offense, Giovanni Manu deserves attention. The second-year offensive lineman impressed in last week’s opener and wants to build on that momentum. Second-year running back Sione Vaki will handle the primary ball-carrying duties, hoping to earn touches alongside Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery when the games count.

The linebacker battle intensifies as Trevor Nowaske and Anthony Pittman compete for one of the final roster spots. Both players need strong performances to separate themselves from the pack.

Meanwhile, the pass rush rotation remains wide open. Al-Quadin Muhammad, Nate Lynn, Ahmed Hassanein, Isaac Ukwu, and Keith Cooper Jr. all have chances to claim valuable snaps in the regular season rotation.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, where the Lions continue building a roster with genuine Super Bowl aspirations. Tonight’s game won’t determine their championship fate, but it could reveal the depth that makes the difference when injuries inevitably strike again.
