Are the Giants playing their starters vs. the Bills? Here’s a look at New York’s preseason Week 1 plan and who might take the field.

The 2025 season for the New York Giants is set for a brutal start, especially in the first 10 weeks. The team faces one of the most demanding schedules in the NFL and will have a new starting quarterback for the first time since 2020.

The team opens the preseason this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. EDT against the Buffalo Bills. After a busy offseason that has excited fans for a competitive year ahead, there will be a series of interesting storylines to follow.

Will New York Giants’ Russell Wilson and Jaxson Dart Play Against the Buffalo Bills?

This season, the most significant change for the team came at the quarterback position. Similar to what we saw with the Cleveland Browns, the Giants brought in three new quarterbacks this offseason: Russell Wilson, the likely starter for the year, Jameis Winston, and rookie Jaxson Dart.

Meanwhile, the pressure on Brian Daboll remains uncertain. While some analysts see his position as head coach in jeopardy and at risk if the team endures another poor season, there is an argument to be made that he has only now chosen his quarterback in Dart, which could buy him more time.

At least among the quarterbacks, Wilson will start the game, according to reporter Art Stapleton, who confirmed that the veteran will play at least one series in the team’s preseason opener. He is also expected to be the starter for the regular season while the team develops Dart for the future.

Speaking of Dart, he will also see plenty of playing time after Wilson and the other starters are pulled to be rested. This will be the fans’ first chance to see Dart, a rookie with high expectations thanks to his athleticism and high production ceiling, in the NFL.

What About the Other Starters? Will They Play This Saturday?

That’s where things get mysterious. Daboll has not specified what workload the starters will get or which of them will play in the team’s preseason opener.

The head coach said he would decide internally which players would take the field and for how long after Thursday’s final practice, leaving the public to determine his decision at game time this Saturday.

This opens the door for more opportunities from players who might currently be in secondary spots on the depth chart, such as rookies Darius Alexander, Cam Skattebo, first-round pick Dart, and others who may have lost ground, like wide receiver Jalin Hyatt.

It’s likely that with Wilson in the lineup, some starters will also play, especially along the offensive line, for as long as the quarterback is on the field. But as Daboll said, that will only be confirmed at game time.
