Mass layoffs aren’t a new thing in the world of sports media. But from time to time, it does bring out some truly horrific stories, leading to justified outrage from the larger NFL fan base. The case with Ryan Clark fell exactly into that bucket.
Fired by ESPN while he was still on the air, the move felt vindictive and cheap. But the former athlete turned analyst has taken the sacking in stride, moving to a different phase of his career. Some of his comments, though, have already ruffled a few feathers.
Ryan Clark Called Out for His Arrogance
For over three decades, Jason Whitlock has made himself a major name in sports media. Starting as a part-time job, the job eventually led him to become a columnist, reporter, and then a prominent on-air personality.
Working with the likes of ESPN and Fox Sports, he has been with Blaze Media since coming on board in June 2021. However, one aspect of his career that has remained unchanged is his bold proclamations.
Recently, the attention of his ire turned to the recently released Clark, after he called himself the “best football analyst in the world.” Taking to X, he fired back with a fiery rebuttal, claiming that the former Pittsburgh Steelers star wasn’t taking any accountability.
“Ryan Clark believes he’s the ‘best football analyst in the world.’ He’s trapped inside a small echo chamber that feels like an enormous one. The echo chamber allows him to dismiss all criticism as racism or jealousy,” Whitlock said. “Wow. No self-awareness. Sad.”

Clark’s comments came on his “The Pivot Podcast“ right after the ESPN firing. Expressing his shock over the decision, he explained how he believed himself to be an integral part of the force within the company.
“There were signs, but I truly thought, for the first time in my life, I worked so hard at something, I was so good at something, everybody acknowledged that I was… that they wouldn’t fire me,” Clark said.
Moreover, after ESPN acquired the rights to broadcast the Super Bowl as part of its takeover of the NFL Network, he was even more confident that he was going to remain in his role with the company.

Clark added, “A company who is going to have the Super Bowl this year, who truly wants to put their best foot forward to the entire world and have the best people talking about football, wouldn’t fire, in my opinion, this is my opinion, and it seems to be the opinion of many others, the best football analyst in the world.”
An undrafted free agent in the 2002 NFL Draft, Clark left an impact on the New York Giants, who signed him to a two-year deal. Continuing to make improvements, he would go on to have a more than a decade-long career in the league.
As a safety, he made it to the Pro Bowl and was also a part of the Steelers squad that won Super Bowl 43 in 2008. After his playing career, he immediately shifted to a career in broadcasting, signing with ESPN in March 2015.
Since then, he’s made regular appearances on shows like “NFL Live,” “SportsCenter,” “Get Up!,” and “First Take.” But his biggest contribution came as the host of “Inside the NFL,” which led to a win at the 44th Sports Emmy Awards for Outstanding Personality/Studio Analyst.
But three years after that honor, ESPN chose to move on from him. It remains to be seen if the veteran analyst takes on another role with a different studio in the future. For the time being, he still has two podcasts in his portfolio.
But given his burning passion for football, a return with some other company might not be completely off the table.
