NFL Analyst Questions Diego Pavia’s Draft Outlook Despite Impressive College Success

In a recent quarterback ranking ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, ESPN analyst Jordan Reid highlighted both the promise and the concern surrounding Vanderbilt quarterback Pavia.

While the sixth-year senior delivered one of the most impressive seasons in college football, Reid suggested his physical profile could significantly impact how teams evaluate him.

Reid described Pavia as a rare case among quarterback prospects, writing that “at just under 5-foot-10, QBs of Pavia’s size hardly ever last in the NFL as late-round selections.”

He added that “his stature makes him an extreme outlier, which could take him off some teams’ draft boards.” According to Reid, that uncertainty places Pavia’s projection in the late Day 3 range or even among undrafted free agents.

Despite those concerns, Pavia’s production and leadership cannot be ignored. Reid credited the Vanderbilt quarterback for leading one of the most dramatic turnarounds in college football.

After transferring to the program prior to the 2024 season, Pavia helped transform the team’s fortunes and finished the year with 3,539 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. He also finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting.

Reid emphasized that Pavia’s playmaking style was central to that success. His ability to extend plays and create outside the structure of the offense allowed Vanderbilt to generate explosive gains, including an FBS-leading 8.8 yards per dropback and 9.4 yards per attempt.

However, Reid also pointed out technical and structural concerns in Pavia’s game. Vanderbilt’s offensive system relied heavily on shotgun formations with limited reads, meaning Pavia still needs to prove he can consistently work through full progressions.

Reid also noted that the quarterback sometimes leaves the pocket too quickly when his initial options are unavailable.

A similar evaluation appeared in Pavia’s official NFL prospect profile, which highlighted both his competitive strengths and the challenges associated with his size. The report described him as “a short, tough, productive quarterback who plays bigger than his measurables.”

The profile also praised his leadership impact on the Vanderbilt program, noting that he was “the main character in Vanderbilt’s shift from doormat to winning program.” That ability to elevate teammates and create offense, both as a passer and a runner, stands out as a major positive for scouts.

Still, the same report echoed Reid’s broader concern about his physical limitations, noting that quarterbacks of his size rarely make NFL rosters. In addition to his height, evaluators also noted mechanical inconsistencies and a deep ball that grades below average.

Ultimately, Pavia’s draft outlook may come down to how teams weigh intangibles against traditional measurements. His competitiveness, improvisational ability, and leadership helped reshape a struggling program.

But the NFL’s historical skepticism toward quarterbacks with similar physical profiles could make his path to a roster spot far more difficult than his college success might suggest.
