Alexander Mattison Free Agency Predictions: Potential Landing Spots Include Bengals, Cowboys, and Raiders

After five seasons in Minnesota, Alexander Mattison will be on the move after the Vikings cut him and signed Aaron Jones.

Alexander Mattison has been a productive running back since he was selected with the 102nd overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings.

In his first four seasons in Minnesota, he was the primary backup for Dalvin Cook and played more of a complementary role. However, Cook signed with the New York Jets in the 2023 offseason, and Mattison rushed for a career-high 800 yards.

During his time in Minnesota, he rushed for 2,370 yards and 11 touchdowns, adding another 718 yards in the air with six receiving touchdowns.

Here’s a look at which NFL teams could be fits for Mattison.

Alexander Mattison Free Agency Landing Spots

The running back market has slowed after a frenzy on Monday and Tuesday. There are still plenty of teams that need a running back with experience like Mattison.

Mattison Could Head to the AFC North

The Cincinnati Bengals recently traded running back Joe Mixon in a trade that helped clear up some cap space, but they will need to replace him.

Adding Mattison could be a low-cost value for the team. With a healthy Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase, the Bengals have one of the most explosive passing games in the league. The team is still figuring out what it will do with Tee Higgins, but the Bengals are going to be a good passing team regardless.

Mattison has shown to be a good receiver in his career, as all three of his touchdowns last season were receiving. He had 30 catches for 192 yards last season. He isn’t a guy who is going to carry the ball 25 times in a game, but he can be a great complementary piece on a talented Bengals team alongside Zack Moss.

Cowboys Make a Free Agent Move, Bring in Mattison

The Cowboys have been extremely quiet in free agency, much to the chagrin of fans and even Undisputed host Skip Bayless.

Jerry Jones has said the Cowboys will be all in this year, but they have signed just one outside free agent, linebacker Eric Kendricks, and retained one other, long-snapper Trent Sieg. One position that is absolutely glaring right now is running back. The only running back currently on the roster is Deuce Vaughn, who was drafted in the sixth round last year.

Much like the Bengals, Mattison’s ability to catch the ball out of the backfield is an intriguing match. Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb formed one of the best QB/WR duos in the league last year, and tight end Jake Ferguson is a future star. Mattison’s versatility would be a welcome addition to this offense and should keep the Cowboys able to try and extend all their superstars.

Raiders Replace Former All-Pro RB Josh Jacobs

The Raiders made a huge splash move by signing defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, but they lost one of their offensive stars, Josh Jacobs.

Jacobs signed a four-year, $48 million deal to play in Green Bay, where he joins one of the youngest and most explosive offenses in the league. Just two years ago, he led the NFL with 1,653 yards and 12 touchdowns.

He wasn’t quite that good last year, but he still rushed for 805 yards. Zamir White was second on the team with 451 yards, but he has only 121 rushes in his first two years.

Bringing in a veteran would be a smart move by the Raiders, and Mattison would be a good fit.
