How Old Can Players Be and Still Be Drafted?
Players entering the NFL are usually between 21 and 24 years old. But given how some players were older than that, how old can one be and still get drafted?
Interestingly, there is no age limit for players looking to enter the NFL draft. The only age-related requirement is that one must be at least three years removed from high school, which explains the usual minimum age of 21.
There’s a common misconception that the league has a strict age cutoff for the draft; however, players in their late 20s have been drafted before. Only the three-year high school rule applies, regardless of whether a player attended college. The rule is intended to ensure that young players are physically and mentally mature enough to compete with the league’s best.
The most common path to the draft/NFL remains the college route. Countless high school players get football scholarships every year to go play college football, where they hone their skill set with the aim of making it to the NFL one day.
Who Is the Oldest Player Ever Drafted Into the NFL?
Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Chris Weinke is documented as the oldest player ever drafted (28). Interestingly, he entered the 2001 draft among the top prospects in his class, despite being at least four years older than most of his peers.
He was selected in the fourth round, behind the likes of Michael Vick and Drew Brees, and went on to have a seven-year career in the NFL. He peaked in his rookie year, when he started 15 games. However, he went 1-14 and spent the remainder of his career as a backup, including a final year with the San Francisco 49ers in 2007.
Weinke played 29 total games across the five seasons he saw the field during his NFL career. He threw for 3,904 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 26 interceptions, while completing 54.4% of his throws. Weinke also rushed for 148 yards and 6 touchdowns on 54 carries.
In this year’s draft, Miami defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor is considered an intriguing prospect, as he is already 25 years old. However, despite his age, he is ranked as the 20th on PFSN’s Big Board.
Mesidor has an average draft position of 23.9 on PFSN’s Mock Draft Simulator, and he is expected to get selected in the first round of the draft.
