AFC Team With $96.89M Cap Space Urged To Hire Sean McDermott After HC’s Exit From Buffalo

A cash-rich AFC team is being urged to pursue Sean McDermott, a proven leader whose availability could reshape the franchise’s future.

The NFL coaching carousel took a sharp turn when Sean McDermott’s nine-year run in Buffalo came to an abrupt end. Within hours, speculation shifted from why the Bills moved on to where one of the league’s steadiest leaders could land next.

One AFC team, financially free and with a leadership void, sits at the center of that conversation as outside voices push for a bold reset built around stability and culture.

Sean McDermott Emerges as Potential Raiders HC Fit as Vegas Searches for Long-Term Direction

The Las Vegas Raiders enter the 2026 offseason with nearly $97 million in cap space and no clear long-term direction at head coach. That combination has made them a natural landing spot in league-wide speculation, and a former Raider added fuel to the discussion.

Richie Incognito took to X and made his stance clear. “The Raiders need to take a serious look at Sean McDermott,” he wrote. “Proven leader. Consistent winner. Culture builder. That’s the kind of stability Vegas needs.”

McDermott’s resume supports the argument. Over nine seasons with the Buffalo Bills, he posted a 98–50 regular-season record. Buffalo reached the playoffs eight times, won at least 10 games in seven straight seasons, and became one of the NFL’s most respected organizations after decades of irrelevance. Only one thing was missing: a Super Bowl appearance.

That absence ultimately led Buffalo to move on after a 33–30 Divisional Round loss to Denver. Ownership chose to consolidate power under general manager Brandon Beane, ending one of the league’s most successful coaching tenures despite narrow playoff defeats and sustained excellence.

Now McDermott enters a market filled with opportunity. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the veteran coach intends to keep coaching, and league insiders believe he could quickly become one of the most sought-after names this cycle.

The Raiders check several boxes. The Raiders are searching for their fifth full-time head coach since 2021. They have struggled to build defensive consistency around star pass rusher Maxx Crosby. McDermott, a defensive specialist, oversaw four top-four scoring defenses in Buffalo and consistently ranked among the league’s best in yards allowed.

The financial situation is also impressive. The Raiders boast one of the highest cap spaces in the NFL, which gives McDermott the chance to mold a roster that reflects his vision, something he did pretty well when he took the reins of a struggling Bills team back in 2017.

There are also familiar ties. McDermott previously worked with Brian Daboll, a potential offensive coordinator candidate for the Raiders. And Raiders minority owner Tom Brady spent years battling McDermott-led defenses in the AFC East, giving him firsthand knowledge of the coach’s preparation and adaptability.

Nothing is imminent. But as the 2026 coaching cycle intensifies, the Raiders stand out as a franchise that could benefit immediately from structure, discipline, and long-term vision. For a team with money, talent, and urgency, the message is getting louder. Sean McDermott may be precisely the stabilizing force the Raiders have been waiting for.
