Once celebrated as one of the NFL’s most dominant running backs, Adrian Peterson has been entangled in a string of off-field issues since retiring. These troubles include recent arrest warrants in Texas over unpaid child support and mounting debt exceeding $12 million.
Peterson’s latest controversy unfolded at JokerStars, a Houston poker club, where a heated argument with professional poker player Joe Castaneda escalated into a physical confrontation that quickly went viral.
Poker Pro Willing to Settle Score in the Ring
After an illustrious collegiate career at the University of Oklahoma, Peterson was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings with the seventh overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft. He made an immediate impact in the league, rushing for more than 1,300 yards and earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
Over his 15-season career, Peterson earned seven Pro Bowl selections, four First-Team All-Pro honors, and won the 2012 NFL MVP award. That season, he came within nine yards of breaking the single-season rushing record while setting the NFL record for most rushing yards in a single game with 296.
Despite his on-field accomplishments, Peterson’s legacy has been overshadowed by numerous off-field controversies. These include being indicted on charges of reckless or negligent injury to a child in 2014, recent arrest warrants in Texas over unpaid child support, and mounting debt that has eclipsed $12 million.
From Poker Table to Potential Pay-Per-View
Peterson’s most recent controversy occurred in late May when he was involved in a heated altercation with Castaneda that escalated into a physical confrontation. Now, a month later, the poker pro says he’s willing to settle their differences in a more structured setting.
“I wouldn’t shy away from it,” Castaneda told TMZ Sports, referring to a potential sanctioned boxing match with Peterson.

Peterson brings some boxing experience to a potential matchup, having previously faced fellow NFL alum Le’Veon Bell in a 2022 celebrity boxing match. That bout ended in a fifth-round TKO loss for the former MVP.
Castaneda, meanwhile, has no formal boxing experience but proved he could hold his own against Peterson during their poker room confrontation.
Whether this feud will develop into a pay-per-view event remains uncertain. Castaneda appears ready, but the matchup would require Peterson’s agreement and a promotion willing to compensate both parties fairly. For now, the poker pro seems content to let his challenge stand, leaving the ball in Peterson’s court to respond.
