Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers revealed one thing that has been "strange" to him since joining the team this offseason.

Aaron Rodgers has worn a lot of jerseys in his career, but none quite like the one he’s putting on in Pittsburgh.

The four-time MVP and future Hall of Fame quarterback is settling into his new home with the Steelers after signing a one-year, $13.65 million deal. While he’s embracing the challenge, there’s one thing about the team that caught him off-guard.

Aaron Rodgers Points Out Surprising Steelers Jersey Tradition

During a appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday, June 24, Rodgers opened up about his early impressions of the Steelers’ organization. He praised the culture, leadership, and camaraderie, but also admitted there’s one “strange” thing that’s made adjusting a little trickier than expected.

“It’s strange that there’s no names on the back of the jerseys,” Rodgers said. “So it’s all facial recognition. And I’m pretty good with names. But it would help if there was like a name on the back so you could lock that in with some of the guys you haven’t quite fully got to talk to yet.”

It’s a small detail, but for a quarterback trying to build chemistry with a brand-new roster, then it’s a real challenge. Rodgers, 41, is the oldest player in the NFL and has spent the last two decades in systems where names on jerseys were the norm.

Rodgers Begins New Chapter in Pittsburgh Steelers Uniform

Rodgers’ move to Pittsburgh marks the third team of his NFL career, following 18 seasons in Green Bay and two injury-riddled years with the New York Jets. After tearing his Achilles on the first drive of the 2023 season, he returned in 2024 and threw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

Now, he’s hoping to lead the Steelers to their first playoff win since 2016. While the jersey quirk might be new, Rodgers is already embracing the team-first mentality that defines the franchise.

He’s been spotted attending barbecues at Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin’s house, participating in teammate charity events, and spending time with veterans like Cam Heyward and Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Why Steelers Don’t Have Names on Practice Jerseys

The Steelers’ practice of omitting names from practice jerseys is rooted in tradition. It’s a way to emphasize team over individual and to encourage players, especially newcomers, to learn each other through interaction, not labels.

For a newcomer like Rodgers, especially one joining a team this late in his career, the adjustment is real. But it also speaks to the culture of accountability and unity that Pittsburgh has long been known for.

Rodgers Embracing Steelers Culture and Challenges

Even with the early learning curve, Rodgers appears energized by the opportunity. He’s stepping into a leadership role and immersing himself in the team’s structure and identity.

This season could very well be his last dance, and he’s setting the tone early. Rodgers is focused on winning, connecting with his teammates, and writing a new chapter in one of the NFL’s most historic uniforms.
