Aaron Rodgers’ future continues to be a mystery for NFL fans. After leaving the Green Bay Packers for the New York Jets in 2023, the four-time NFL MVP will be headed to a new team ahead of the 2025 season.
Despite receiving an offer from the Pittsburgh Steelers over two months ago, Rodgers hasn’t inked a deal yet. Here’s what the veteran QB had to say about the free agency delay.
Aaron Rodgers’ Reason Behind Delaying Free Agent Contract Signing
The Steelers landed Skylar Thompson in January and drafted Will Howard in the 2025 NFL Draft. They also have Mason Rudolph return to the roster. The franchise has an empty quarterback spot and is probably waiting for Rodgers to make the final call.
The 41-year-old made an appearance on Wednesday’s episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience” and revealed the reason for delaying the contract signing.
“I’ve been in the weeds with these people who are close to me that have cancer,” he said.
It might be a possibility that Rodgers is still evaluating the circumstances and hasn’t made a decision about his career yet. Speculations suggest that the Super Bowl 45 champion will soon join Pittsburgh’s roster. The possibility of a retirement announcement looks bleak, but hasn’t been ruled out either.
Rodgers had hinted at his personal life issues on “The Pat McAfee Show” in April, saying, “From the jump, you know, I’m in a different phase of my life. I’m 41 years old, I’m in a serious relationship. I have off-the-field stuff going on that requires my attention.”
He was not certain about continuing his NFL career either. The star QB believes that making a commitment to a team is a big thing.
“I have personal commitments I’ve made, not knowing what my future would look like after last year, that are important to me. And I’ve got a couple of people in my inner, inner circle that are dealing with some really difficult stuff. So I have a lot of things that are taking my attention — and have really from January — away from football.” Rodgers concluded.

The Steelers will begin their OTAs on May 27. HC Mike Tomlin would like to get the fourth quarterback on the roster before or by that time. Rodgers told McAfee that he has had discussions with the Steelers’ head coach. The 10-time Pro Bowler doesn’t want to keep anyone hostage and has told the franchise to move on from him if they want to.
The Rodgers Free Agency saga has been going on for over two months now. The player has made it clear that it’s not about the money; he is open to anything and not attached to any outcome. His intention behind playing another year is just to remain a starting quarterback and lead a franchise.
a true Pittsburgh Steelers fan, since the 70’s I’m happy with Mason Rudolph as the Steelers starting quarterback he doesn’t bring any drama because Aaron Rodgers only cares about Aaron Rodgers and that’s why Steelers owner Arthur Joseph Rooney ll shuold stop wasting on Aaron Rodgers
