Aaron Rodgers has achieved virtually everything there is to achieve for a football player in the NFL. A four-time league MVP, Super Bowl champion, and widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, Rodgers’ legacy is one of one.
However, despite all his accomplishments on the gridiron, the former Green Bay Packers superstar has had a strained relationship with his family, including his parents. Recently opening up about the struggles, he spoke about the connection he has shared with his father over the years.
Aaron Rodgers Gets Honest About His Father
The complicated situation between Rodgers and his family has been in the public eye for well over a decade, when his brother, Jordan Rodgers, first brought the rift into the limelight. However, on his end, the former Super Bowl champion has been mum on the topic.
Preferring to keep his private life private, he reiterated his decision in the Netflix docuseries, Aaron Rodgers: Enigma. “I was quiet about it because I thought the best way to do it was to not talk about it publicly.”
Recently, appearing on Mia’s Brothers On The Hot Seat podcast, he once again opened up about his relationship, in particular with his father. “I don’t have a relationship with my dad,” he began, before detailing how his bond has evolved over the years.
“One thing that changed for me, at least, when we were still in each other’s lives, was when we grow up, we think our parents are Superman and Superwoman and they can do no wrong. And the you get older and you realize they’re just like you and I. Just out there trying to do their best.”
Recently, as Ian O’Connor wrote his biography, the former New York Jets star revealed his first meeting with Ed since 2014 came coincidentally at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe.
An emotional exchange saw the two sides exchange words of love, and Rodgers recalled, “That was a special moment.” But a change in mentality is what finally allowed the four-time MVP to see his father in a new light.
“Once I changed the perspective on how I looked at him,” Rodgers said on the podcast. “It allowed me to see him as a flawed human being just trying to do his best. Because I think that’s what any parent would say they’re trying to do. They don’t have all the answers.”
While he did acknowledge that issues still linger between the pair, the fresh perspective allowed him to let go of any resentment he held against his dad. The reply at the podcast/Q&A session felt like a genuine step in the right direction for the legendary QB to mend any broken fences.
Now, we will see in the coming months if this can finally bring the family closer together.
