The Pittsburgh Steelers lost their seventh consecutive playoff game under Mike Tomlin. Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers, led by Matt LaFleur, also lost their sixth postseason game in the past seven years.
Both teams are primarily associated with Aaron Rodgers, who is out of the Super Bowl race again. This bitter reality builds pressure on the Packers’ head coach, LaFleur, to find a new coaching job. Meanwhile, Rodgers recently clarified his stance on his former team’s head coach’s future.
Aaron Rodgers Sends Clear Message on Matt LaFleur and Mike Tomlin’s Future After Playoff Losses
After the Steelers lost the Wild-card game against the Houston Texans, Rodgers appeared before the NFL media and answered some of the significant questions.
When reporters asked him about LaFleur and Tomlin’s future in their respective franchises, Rodgers couldn’t hold his blunt take. “I mean, this league has changed a lot in my 21 years. When you hear conversations about the Mike Tomlin of the world, Matt LaFleur of the world, those are two that I’ve played with.”
He further added, “And when I first got in the league, there wouldn’t be a conversation about whether those guys were on the hot seat. But the way that the league is covered now and the way that there’s snap decisions and the validity given to the Twitter experts and all the experts on TV now who make it seem like they know what the hell they’re talking about, to me that’s an absolute joke.”
Rodgers wrapped up his thoughts by pushing back firmly against the idea that either coach should even be considered as being on the hot seat. He called it a reflection of where the league and society currently stand.
Rodgers pointed to Matt LaFleur’s body of work in Green Bay and the sustained success they shared, while also emphasizing that Mike Tomlin has been one of the most successful head coaches in the NFL for nearly two decades.
The Super Bowl champion also added that when an organization has the right leader and a strong culture, change should not even be part of the conversation. Rodgers acknowledged the growing outside pressure that can influence front office decisions, but made it clear that it is not how he would operate, nor how the league used to function.
Essentially, the 42-year-old denied the possibility that both head coaches, especially LaFleur, would be fired. But from where did the conversation about LaFleur’s future in the NFL emerge? The answer to this question lies in what the NFL insider revealed about LaFleur’s contract.
NFL Insider Reveals Tough Contract Decision for the Packers HC LaFleur
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Packers “now are expected to try to work out a deal in the coming days to keep head coach Matt LaFleur in Green Bay, per sources.”
That outlook was reinforced on Sunday by NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, who added that Green Bay plans to enter extension discussions with LaFleur after the season wraps up, with a “mutual goal” of getting a deal done.
The current contract situation of LaFleur clearly states that there is only a year left in his contract. Although it would seem easy for LaFleur to sign an extension, the franchise president, Ed Policy, has thoughts on the future HC that drag LaFleur’s future into the spotlight.
Policy had said in June 2025 that he would not prefer a lame-duck coach for the Packers. This puts LaFleur’s future in jeopardy. However, the HC’s recent update regarding his contract on January 12, 2025, may provide some relief.
Talking about his talks with the Packers’ President, LaFleur said, “We talked briefly on the plane, and there is going to be a time when we are going to get together either late tonight or tomorrow sometime.”
Well, let’s see what the franchise decides on LaFleur. Statistically, since his hiring in 2019, LaFleur has only missed the playoffs in the 2022 NFL season. So, there is a high probability that the incumbent head coach will continue in Green Bay.
