How Will Aaron Rodgers Handle His Week 1 Return to MetLife Stadium?

Rodgers officially signed a one-year, $13.6 million deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers in June 2025, marking the third team of his storied career. The move followed months of speculation and a drawn-out free agency process, with Rodgers ultimately citing head coach Mike Tomlin as a key factor in his decision.

The NFL anticipated this long-rumored move, scheduling the Steelers on the road against the Jets in Week 1 to capitalize on the quarterback’s high-profile departure and potential revenge narrative. For Rodgers, this creates an immediate opportunity to prove that his best football remains ahead of him.

During a conversation with Kyle Brandt on NFL Network, Rodgers suggested that the timing of the matchup was no coincidence, leaning into his well-documented history of entertaining conspiracy theories and questioning official narratives.

“That’s the way it goes, sometimes. Did they have any inside information? I don’t know,” Rodgers jokingly remarked to Brandt. “Who were they talking to? I’d love to know.”

Rodgers’ departure from New York followed a season plagued by injury and internal strife. After tearing his Achilles just four snaps into the 2023 season opener, the veteran quarterback spent months rehabbing while rumors swirled about locker room discord and frustrations within the front office.

He bounced back to start all 17 games in 2024, finishing with 3,897 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. However, the Jets limped to a disappointing 5-12 record, ultimately falling short of the playoff expectations that had surrounded his arrival.

What Other Matchups Will Define Rodgers’ 2025 Campaign?

The storylines extend far beyond Week 1. Rodgers is also set to face former NFC North friends and rivals throughout the upcoming season, including a highly anticipated Sunday Night Football showdown against the Green Bay Packers in Week 8.

“But I look at it deeper. To start off with the Jets, then play Seattle, where DK [Metcalf] just came from, go to Chicago, [play] Green Bay in Pittsburgh. I was hoping to get two NFC North road games, but we’re doing the other one in Ireland,” Rodgers added. “I’m excited. We get to play the Jets, Packers, Bears, Vikings, and the Lions as well. It will be fun.”

At 41 years old, Rodgers enters his 21st NFL season with a chip on his shoulder and a new city behind him. The veteran quarterback will soon face each of his former rivals, beginning with a charged Week 1 return to MetLife Stadium. This sets the stage for what could be a final NFL season fueled by familiar faces, unfinished business, and the burning desire to prove his doubters wrong once and for all.
