Despite being sidelined with a significant Achilles injury͏, Deshaun ͏Watson’s͏ presence continues to loom͏ large over ͏the Cleveland Browns͏’ quarterback room.
Although his on-field ÍŹfuture remains uncertain, Watson ÍŹhas been quietly makingÍŹ a significant impact ÍŹoff the field by mentoring rookie quarterbacks such as ÍŹShÍŹedeur Sanders and DÍŹiÍŹllon ÍŹGaÍŹbriel, something which few anticipated would happen.
Deshaun Watson Quietly Shapes Cleveland’s Quarterback Future from the Sidelines
During minicamp, Watson kept a low profile physically, watching practices from a weight room window or briefly stepping out in a hoodie, nearly unrecognizable. But inside the facility, he has been anything but invisible.

Team sources have expressed strong approval of Watson’s involvement during his recovery from a second Achilles surgery in January. They’ve specifically praised the way he has taken on a leadership role and contributed as a mentor to the quarterback group, describing his presence and participation as a major positive inside the building.
Though Watson is anticipated to be sidelined for much or possibly the entirety of the 2025 season, the Browns have yet to officially declare him out. Still, his comeback is uncertain and any return hinges entirely on medical clearance.
One league source speculated Watson could return to practice by October, but the team is in no rush to open his recovery window.
In the meantime, Watson has become a guiding figure for the Browns’ four-way quarterback competition featuring Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Gabriel and Sanders. He’s been particularly invested in the development of the two rookies.
His involvement includes attending meetings and offering strategic insights that have had a direct impact on the team’s offensive discussions.
“So just being able to be around him and nudge him and ask a question… it’s super cool that we do have five guys in the room that kind of can speak to their own experience,” Gabriel said. “Even Deshaun this morning, talking through a concept and kind of how he sees it in the red area… just how you think of it. So appreciate him a bunch, too.”
Watson’s bond with Sanders seems especially strong. Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion͏ Sanders, Shedeur’s father, previously supported Watson publicly after fans cheered during his Achilles injury last October. Watson has been actively mentoring Sanders, helping the rookie adapt more quickly to the demands of the NFL.
This version of Watson is a stark contrast to last season, when he drew internal criticism for choosing to rehab in Miami during a brutal 3-14 campaign. Now, back in Cleveland, he has leaned into a leadership role, offering playbook knowledge and emotional support alike.
While Wat͏son͏’͏s future͏ on the field remains uncertain,͏ his off-field influence is clear and potentially shaping the Browns’ ͏long-term quarterback blueprint.
With a talented rookie ÍŹduo developing under his ÍŹguidanceÍŹ, Cleveland could be laying theÍŹ groundwork for a low-ÍŹcost, high-upside quarterback room in 2026, with Watson ÍŹstill ÍŹplaying an influential, if ÍŹredefined,ÍŹ role.
