Pat McAfee has a daily show on ESPN, a seat on “College GameDay,” a new role on “Monday Night Countdown,” a country album, and he was previously involved with the WWE. Now, McAfee is trying his hand at acting, having been cast as a drill instructor in Peter Berg’s upcoming World War II film “The Mosquito Bowl.”
For some football fans, the movie role finally triggered an obvious question: How much McAfee is too much McAfee? The film gives the former Indianapolis Colts punter another lane outside sports media, but the announcement produced considerably more exhaustion than applause.

After Netflix announced McAfee’s role and showed several photos from the upcoming film, NFL fans were quick to react.

Another user sounded less angry and more bewildered.

Some fans just pointed out that McAfee’s ever-expanding résumé was starting to feel excessive.
“Aight guys, it might be getting a little outta hand now,” the user wrote.
The harshest version of that frustration came from another fan who asked, “How much more of this moron are they gonna shove down our throats.”

Then came the conspiracy-flavored joke.

The reaction is less about one supporting movie role than the volume of McAfee’s presence across sports and entertainment.

Recently, McAfee also received quite a bit of backlash after he released his country album, “The Diary of a Polarizing Figure.”
McAfee’s Media Footprint Keeps Growing
“The Mosquito Bowl” is directed by Berg, whose football résumé includes “Friday Night Lights.” Netflix says the movie follows four star college football players who enlist in the Marines after Pearl Harbor and eventually play a famous game while preparing for the invasion of Okinawa.
McAfee plays a drill instructor, and the film is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on Oct. 30 before arriving on Netflix on Nov. 25.
McAfee’s Hollywood push is not happening by accident. The ESPN star is represented by WME executive chairman Ari Emanuel, who has reportedly been trying to expand him into film and television. McAfee also landed a four-episode arc on the Paramount+ show “Tulsa King.”
At ESPN, the expansion has been just as noticeable. McAfee already hosts his weekday show and appears on “College GameDay,” and ESPN added him to “Monday Night Countdown” for 2026. He has also been involved in talks over a potential extension reportedly worth more than $60 million annually.
That context helps explain why this movie role seemed to bother so many people. The general consensus among many fans is that they are sick of McAfee being everywhere as a result of overexposure.
McAfee broke his silence on the movie role, writing on X, “It was a mind blowing honor to be asked to represent the toughest of the tough and the greatest of the great. The true pinnacle of a [expletive]. What I learned was that a DI in the Marine Corps is the actual keeper of the Marines culture. They mold boys and girls into war ready men and women. I did not take any of it lightly. It was an honor of a lifetime to learn about the Corps and tried my best to do these super human’s justice. RAH. Kill. Slay. #BreakChains”
McAfee has built his post-playing career by being difficult to ignore. The latest fan response suggests he has succeeded so thoroughly that, for some viewers, being impossible to ignore is becoming the complaint.
