Taylor Fritz receives fan support as controversy over João Fonseca's coverage at Eastbourne makes waves on social media.

Taylor Fritz staged a remarkable comeback to win his suspended second-round match in Eastbourne, overcoming Brazilian teenager João Fonseca on Thursday, June 26.

Taylor Fritz Receives Fan Support Amid Controversy Over João Fonseca Coverage in Eastbourne

Fritz looked out of rhythm in the opening set as Fonseca took control and won it 6-3. Playing under diminishing light, the Brazilian dug deep to claim the second set in a tiebreak, 7-6(5). With the match level at one set apiece, play was eventually suspended due to darkness.

When play resumed, Fritz adjusted well to the windy conditions, regained his rhythm, and served for the match at 5-3. Fonseca put up resistance to extend the contest, but the World No. 5 eventually closed out the final set 7-5 to advance to the next round.

Despite solid performances from both players, Fritz joked in a now-deleted comment that the highlight reel of their match would mostly showcase his opponent.

“Commenting this before watching the points… Betting that this is 80% Fonseca highlights maybe 1/2 points of me winning,” he wrote.

The 27-year-old seemed to have his prediction validated when he later wrote: “Update, I was right.”

His comments sparked controversy on social media, with many fans mocking him. Fritz later clarified that his remarks were made in jest and that some people didn’t understand the humor. In the wake of his comments, several fans have come out in support of Fritz, with one saying:

“Even if it was meant to be a joke he has a point.”

“Despite this being a joke by Fritz, the favouritism of TennisTV on certain players is hilarious,” another wrote.

“Say what you want about Fritz, it’s annoying when you win and it’s all about your opponent. Really annoying when your opponent is not the old big four or the new big two,” one chimed in.

A fan humorously criticized the excessive praise for Fonseca, writing: “to be fair, the guy won the match and the media still acts like fonseca won 😆🤣 the glazing over the kid is comical, respect Taylor 😂.”

Here are some additional comments from fans online:

  • “Don’t like Taylor’s style of play, but he’s cooking with this comment!!” A fan commented.
  • “No need to defend yourself against these guys Taylor. It’s very apparent the tennis media has a hard on for Fonesca,” another said.
  • Fritz boasts a strong track record in Eastbourne, having won three titles on its grass courts, and is now vying for a fourth this year.

You mixed them up in the beginning of the article when saying the score line. Too much emphasis on social media drama that you made an error about the most important part of the match
