Cade Klubnik had a poor season with Clemson in 2023. He kept struggling as the starting quarterback, and the team’s offensive line often seemed out of rhythm. His inconsistent play made some fans question whether he was the right choice for the starting job.
Cade Klubnik and Dabo Swinney’s Roles and Decisions During a Tough Time
These criticisms could not move head coach Dabo Swinney from believing in Klubnik’s potential. He kept his quarterback in the starting lineup, even when others were calling for a change. That choice changed everything for both the coach and his player.
After the season ended with Klubnik completing 290-of-454 passes for 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions, Swinney sat down with Klubnik for an honest conversation. He reminded him that other players were coming for his spot. But more importantly, Swinney told him he still believed in him.
“Better not listen to none of that,” Swinney said. “Don’t listen to all that crap last year that you ain’t good enough to get it done, and don’t listen to when they tell you you’re the Heisman guy, or you’re the whatever.’ Just do the work.”
That message stuck with Klubnik. He took it to heart and used it as fuel during the offseason. He worked harder than ever to improve, focusing on his footwork, accuracy, and decision-making.
His hard work paid off in 2024. Klubnik threw for 3,639 yards and 36 touchdowns, with only six interceptions.
Now, Klubnik is entering his final season at Clemson. He’s not just playing for stats or awards. He’s chasing a championship.

“I came to Clemson to win one,” Klubnik said. “I think we’ve got the best team we’ve had since I got here.”
He might have a point. Clemson is set to bring back eight starters on offense and eight on defense. This group has the depth, talent, and experience to compete. But more than anything, they’re hungry to prove themselves.
The bond between Klubnik and Swinney has been key to this turnaround. The coach stayed loyal to his quarterback during tough times, and that loyalty built trust in him.
Looking back, Klubnik says the challenges of 2023 taught him valuable lessons. He learned how to stay focused, lead, and handle pressure, which helped shape him into the quarterback he is now.
His journey shows how much a player can grow with hard work and support. What once looked like a career heading in the wrong direction has become a story of redemption.
