Who Will Be Attending NFL Training Camp?

Training camp is mandatory for all team members, including rookies and those recovering from injuries.

To get used to their new environment and put in some extra work, rookies usually report a day or two ahead of veteran players.

Despite the requirement for training camp, several players in the league hold out due to contract disputes, resulting in fines.

A player must report even if they haven’t been cleared to practice due to an injury, so they can follow a treatment plan agreed by the team and get closer to playing again.

What Should We Expect From NFL Training Camp?

Typically, training camp begins with a five-day acclimation phase that includes meetings, physicals, and classroom instruction on installing offensive and defensive tactics.

Players engage in conditioning exercises at this stage to warm up and ensure they’re in good physical condition. After Days 2 and 3, the helmets are put on.

By the fourth and fifth days, the pads are on and the guys are practicing at full speed. After that, competition for positions becomes increasingly intense, ultimately leading to roster changes.

How Many Players Are Cut From NFL Training Camp?

Each squad has 90 players to assess at the beginning of camp. The offseason roster covers their draft class as well as any undrafted rookies signed post-draft.

To give coaches and executives enough time to assess their rosters, the cut process begins after the preseason games conclude. By Aug. 27 at 4 p.m. ET, the NFL’s roster cutdown deadline, each team must reduce its active roster to 53 players.

To get below the roster cap, each team must remove a total of 37 players. Before the regular season starts, up to more than 1,000 players will be cut.

A player can still rejoin the team by joining the 16-man practice squad after being released.

NFL Training Camp Storylines to Watch

Training camps mean that the return of football is here. As we prepare for the new season, here are some storylines to keep an eye on.

New York Giants: Quarterback Development Focus

Rookie Jaxson Dart, selected No. 25 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, will be developing behind veteran Russell Wilson as the New York Giants focus on long-term quarterback development.

Jacksonville Jaguars: Historic Two-Way Talent

Two-way phenom Travis Hunter turned heads by being selected No. 2 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2025 NFL Draft. On June 22, Hunter signed a $46.65 million fully guaranteed contract, and expectations are sky-high for the Heisman Trophy winner.

Cleveland Browns: Quarterback Competition Heats Up

Joe Flacco is reportedly ahead in the battle for the starting spot over rookies Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, with the Cleveland Browns emphasizing a developmental approach. Sanders, who slid to the fifth round, faces questions about his roster spot amid the crowded quarterback room.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Aaron Rodgers Finally Arrives

Aaron Rodgers’ integration into the Pittsburgh Steelers offense is a primary focus after the four-time MVP signed a one-year, $13.65 million deal. Rodgers said it was “here or not play” when describing his decision to join Pittsburgh, particularly citing his relationship with head coach Mike Tomlin.

Cincinnati Bengals: Pass-Rusher Contract Drama

Trey Hendrickson is in a contentious contract dispute with the Cincinnati Bengals, potentially skipping camp unless a deal gets done, raising questions about the organization’s ability to retain key defensive talent.

Arizona Cardinals: Defensive Cohesion and Offensive Balance

With new signings and a focus on defensive improvement, the Arizona Cardinals’ revamped defense is one to watch. On the offensive side, the team needs to find ways to maximize its offensive weapons and create a more balanced attack.

Atlanta Falcons: Michael Penix Jr. Takes Full Control

Michael Penix Jr., who was selected No. 8 overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2024 NFL Draft, embarks on his first training camp as the starter after taking over late in his rookie season, making it an important stage for establishing himself as the long-term franchise quarterback.

Seattle Seahawks: Sam Darnold’s New Beginning

Sam Darnold, who signed a three-year, $100.5 million contract with the Seattle Seahawks, will be showcased early as camp reveals how well he grasps the offense under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.
