Controversial Line Call Sparks Heated Exchange Between Maria Sakkari and Yulia Putintseva

The Bad Homburg Open serves as a key warm-up event for Wimbledon. Sakkari’s appearance this year was only her second at the tournament, and she received a wildcard entry into the main draw. The Greek star has had a forgettable season and is looking to build momentum ahead of the Slam.

Things shifted during a tense second-set tiebreak when a key point was marred by a disputed call that initially went Putintseva’s way. Sakkari challenged it, and the review overturned the call, giving her the point.

Putintseva, frustrated by the decision, lingered in the deuce court with her racket down, seemingly expecting the point to be replayed. However, the chair umpire confirmed the point stood, giving Sakkari a crucial lead in the breaker. She went on to close out the match 7-5, 7-6 (8).

As the players met at the net for the traditional handshake, the tension boiled over. A video clip posted on X shortly after the match shows the moment the confrontation began.

Sakkari appeared to accuse Putintseva of avoiding eye contact during the handshake. Putintseva snapped back, gesturing dramatically and responding out loud before turning quickly to shake hands with the chair umpire. But the exchange didn’t end there.

As Sakkari walked toward her bench, she suddenly veered toward Putintseva’s side of the court, reigniting the argument. While Putintseva packed up her bag, she motioned for Sakkari to return to her side. Sakkari initially walked away but returned partway across the court to continue the exchange. The altercation dragged on for several more seconds as both players exchanged sharp words.

The argument ended with a dramatic gesture from Putintseva, who mockingly bowed with her hands raised, seemingly signaling surrender or offering sarcastic closure. Reportedly, insults like “nobody likes you” and “you’re annoying” were exchanged during the confrontation.

Sakkari’s win gave her the edge in her head-to-head series with Putintseva, improving it from 2-1 to 3-1. It also marked her first appearance in the second round at Bad Homburg, where she is set to face either No. 8 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova or Belinda Bencic on June 23.
