ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas is looking forward to the upcoming American Century Championship. After memorable rounds with NFL veterans Ryan Fitzpatrick and Mike Vrabel last year, the seasoned commentator is eagerly anticipating another thrilling competition at Lake Tahoe’s prestigious celebrity golf tournament.
The 2025 tournament promises to be the most star-studded yet, with Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry making his highly anticipated return after skipping last year’s event to help Team USA win Olympic gold in Paris. Bilas joins an elite field of over 90 celebrities and athletes, all vying for glory at the world’s richest celebrity golf championship from July 9-13.
Bilas Praises Tournament’s Unmatched Atmosphere and Leadership
In an exclusive interview with PFSN, Bilas describes the American Century Championship experience as unparalleled in competitive golf. “It is the most fun and competitive golf environment outside of the PGA Tour. I mean, you know, fans are lining the fairways on all the holes,” Bilas explained. The tournament’s unique format creates an atmosphere unlike any other sporting event.
The ESPN analyst particularly highlighted American Century Investments CEO Jonathan Thomas, praising his exceptional leadership qualities. “I can’t imagine a better leader. I’ve learned so much from him over the last several years, just being around him, of kindness and how to treat people,” Bilas shared, emphasizing the tournament’s welcoming culture.

Last year’s tournament provided Bilas with unforgettable experiences alongside notable playing partners. “I had a great round with Ryan Fitzpatrick and Mike Vrabel and played with Bobby Flay,” he recalled fondly.
Fitzpatrick finished 41st with 16 points while Patriots head coach Vrabel ended up 55th. Bilas himself finished 52nd with 7 points.
Bilas also experienced wildlife encounters during his 2024 round, discovering a bear family near the sixth green. “Last year, I hit on the sixth hole. I hit a shot that rolled just off the back of the green. And when I went back to putt it toward the hole, there was a bear back there with two bear cut,” he recounted.
“That was a little bit jarring. That was a gallery that I wasn’t willing to interact with. But I went back, hit the shot, and got out of there,” Bilas added. For him, the tournament represents pure enjoyment. “It’s one big three-day party,” he emphasized about the Lake Tahoe experience.
Curry’s Return Elevates Competitive Field
With Stephen Curry returning to defend his 2023 title, Bilas faces an even more competitive field this year. The Warriors superstar’s dramatic championship win featured an 18-foot eagle putt on the final hole, making him the first active professional athlete to claim victory since 2000.

Bilas will compete against defending champion Mardy Fish, who won the 2024 tournament in Curry’s absence with 83 points. The stellar 2025 field includes NFL MVP Josh Allen, the Kelce brothers Travis and Jason, Aaron Rodgers, and NBA legends Charles Barkley and Ray Allen.
The tournament’s competitive depth extends beyond headliners, featuring Tony Romo as a three-time champion and Pro Football Hall of Famers Jerry Rice, Steve Young, and Charles Woodson.
As Bilas prepares for another memorable week at Edgewood Tahoe, his excitement reflects the tournament’s unique appeal. From facing elite competition to creating lasting memories with fellow celebrities, the American Century Championship continues to deliver what Bilas calls the ultimate golf experience outside the PGA Tour.
